Hi -

I was wondering if you all (or some of you) would be willing to help me out with an AT related research project....

If you would be so willing, then the following questions are for you...

1) If you were (or are able) to identify sound - how would you want to be able to be identified to a sound?

2) How do you identify sounds now?

3) If you could be notified of a sound - would you want to be? what sounds would you want to be notified of?

4) What would you want to know about a sound?

Thanks so much!!!

Hi -

I was wondering if you all (or some of you) would be willing to help me out with an AT related research project....

1) If you were (or are able) to identify sound - how would you want to be able to be identified to a sound?

I would love to identify where the sound is coming from.

2) How do you identify sounds now?

mostly environmental sounds

3) If you could be notified of a sound - would you want to be? what sounds would you want to be notified of?

Never really thought of it...I guess it would be someone calling my name.
4) What would you want to know about a sound?

Is it really true that every singer's voice has its own kinds of tunes...

Thanks so much!!!

I hope my questions are appropriate to your research.

I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but I'm lately hard of hearing. So I used to be completely hearing but I don't know if that affects the results?

1) If you were (or are able) to identify sound - how would you want to be able to be identified to a sound?
I'd like someone to tap me on the shoulder and indicate where the noise is coming from.

2) How do you identify sounds now?
Watching for other people's reactions to see what's going on, and speachreading for some sounds I have trouble hearing.

3) If you could be notified of a sound - would you want to be? what sounds would you want to be notified of?
It would be nice to know if someone was trying to get my attention, especially in a noisy place.

4) What would you want to know about a sound?
Like I said, I grew up hearing so I pretty much remember and know how sounds work. ;)

Thank you so so so much :)

I hope more people reply -

Your response (both people that have replied so far) are so helpful -

I would think - being a hearing person and all - but from the research that having some use of residual hearing would be helpful - but maybe not?

Also, thanks mongoose - I wonder what the response to sound would be if someone grew up hearing and had some auditory memory - if that would play into wanting to know what sound was happening.

SOOOO - contemplate this - if you were out and about in the community - like I am sure you already are - well, at least I hope you aren't cooped in your home ; )

What sounds in your environment would you want to know about??

AND if something could notify you of it - aside from a person you are with - what would you want that something to be and what would you want to know about that sound (direction, loudness, type of sound???).

Thanks so much for your help!

Yeah, it can be really frustrating at times.

I'd like to know about things that have everyone else's attention that I miss out on. Especially in class when something funny happens (I'm a high school student).

Direction. Half the time someone calls my name, and if I hear it, I'll be looking in a completely different direction for them.

Thanks so much for your help!

No problem. ;)

1) If you were (or are able) to identify sound - how would you want to be able to be identified to a sound? It depends on the situation. Oncoming bus? Really really quickly. Something that is just interesting? A tap on the shoulder or friendly wave and point.

2) How do you identify sounds now? No HAs: It has to be really loud and I need to see it to know for sure, like a bus going by. HAs: It's still hard to identify sounds unless I'm looking right at it and know for sure. Sometimes it's just noise, I think. I don't know. Voices are easier because I can match them up with someone's talking. But there are lots of sounds that I'm not sure what they are or if they are just weird things from the HAs.

3) If you could be notified of a sound - would you want to be? what sounds would you want to be notified of? Anything dangerous, of course. Anything I need to pay attention to such as doorbells (I share an apartment with 2 hearing people that is not modified for deaf people) or someone talking to me (I have had people in public talking to my back [Note: That doesn't so much work.] and I haven't realized it and later found out they thought I was ignoring them).

4) What would you want to know about a sound? Direction. Do I actually have to pay attention to it?

;)

Thanks for being so honest in your responses -

Often times, in doing research you end asking so many questions - mainly just hoping anyone will answer...but not the case here - thanks :dance2:

So here is my next ? (okay so maybe more than one:giggle:)...

How often would you want to be notified of a sound - all the time, only when your outside, or ???

Would you want to be notified of a sound through a message on your phone? a pager?

Would you want the sound identified for you?

Would you want to know how loud the sound is, what class of sound it falls in, distance, direction?

And then like Kaitin so graciously pointed out...do you really care? or is this something that us hearing people THINK you should care about??? :werd:

OH and if you would like to know more about me so you don't think you are talking with some complete freak (okay only kinda freaky) - here is my Myspace page
MySpace.com - Palmtree - 32 - Female - Pinedale, Wyoming - www.myspace.com/mmpalmertree

Again thank you so much for your help and honesty!!!

I only want to be notified of the important sounds like, for example, someone saying "Excuse me" several times without tapping from behind.

Would you want to be notified of a sound through a message on your phone? a pager?

Only the important ones...not all the environmental sounds.

Would you want the sound identified for you?

Yes

Would you want to know how loud the sound is, what class of sound it falls in, distance, direction?

Not how loud nor how far, but I would like to know the direction the sound is coming from.

And then like Kaitin so graciously pointed out...do you really care? or is this something that us hearing people THINK you should care about??? :werd:

Again thank you so much for your help and honesty!!!

Since I can benefit from my HAs for the sounds that are important to me, it has been fine. For doorbells and alarms, I have a deaf signal system in my house. In other people's houses, I usually can hear the doorbell or someone knocking on the door.

My big problem is when someone is calling my name and I dont know where it is coming from. I usually look around like some idiot before finding the source. :giggle:

Thanks for the perspective of benefit with HA's - good to know about the being able to identify certain sounds in certain situations.

I really appreciate all of your help - if you think of anything else you might want to add - feel free : )
