Router replacement

Don't mean he have exactly same firmware or hardware type (A or B or C) as you have. He may have a bad firmware or bad hardware type.

What firmware and type your DIR-655 is?

Mine firmware 2.01NA and B1 and it is 100% stable with iPad,PS3, Macbook, Macbook Air, and Mini Mac thru wireless.

I updated it a while ago, I'll have to check it sometimes when I'm home.

Good question. I need to know whats firmware for my Macbook Pro, iPad 2 and Apple TV 2.

Hmm.. can you try to downgrade and flash old firmware? Yeah, it's not possible with all firmware and routers but just research and see if you can do it, Catty. Might save you a shot if it's a software problem.

Other than that only other thoughts I can say is the PCB or wireless semiconductor/chip is going bad.

I re-flashed same Firmware, 1.35NA and still not helping. I will try downgrade it. I believed that I dropped the router from ceiling to floor (Actually it was sitting on top of house's main hot/cold water pipes under the rafter for better signal in basement for 1st floor and beyond. It worked lot better). I think I cracked its Atheros wireless chipset. DIR-655's 4 LAN ports works fine. I must have Wifi connection in my house regardless!!! Can't live without it. :giggle:

Belkin N Router was just my temporary and it crashed pretty often even if my son still have network connection but my VP just won't connect. Had to reboot every now and then. I downloaded Dlink Firmware while using Belkin N and 1.3mb download was so dang fast that Virus scan after download was already running on that file and I was puzzled. It's like a "blip" to me. Much better than Dlink but I still treat Belkin router as a crappy trash good for parting out. It still have original Firmware that have Access Point option. Maybe I can just use it to extend range in my backyard :hmm:

I just review two Gaming routers, Linksys E4200 and Asus RT-N56U. Both routers have good rating BUT Asus seem to be much "meaner" than others because it can handle really heavy usage without problem. My friend just ordered Asus RT-N56U recently per my advice to replace her crappy DIR-655 rev. B router. She usually download lot of stuff so she wanted meanest router that can handle SureWest FIoS network speed. So I'm going to buy Asus, I want Fast Fast Fast and Smooooootth!!!

Thanks Highlander! :thumb:

DIR-655 was the poorest rush job design router I ever seen.

It look like Dlink was trying to rush to get on the Gigabytes network market when those other brand gigabytes routers was coming out in the 200 dollar ranges so they were rushing to make those $$$$$$ before price drop when it become standard.

Several of my friends had DIR-655 and the speed was horrible even on WIRED connection!

One friend was having a crappy speed on his video so I went over and did a speed test found that going up and down each time I tested ON WIRED connection!!!!!!

When I did a speed test directly to modem it was stable and at the max speed offered by ISP.

So my friend replaced his router and speed on wired and wireless was at it max speed. He replaced it with a Netgear N600 for those who wondering.

I used Buffalo Routers on my networks

As for router to router, nothing wrong with it as long you set one router as an access point and use LAN port not WAN.

Router can be set to be use as a switch and an access point if you know how to do it properly and does not effect performance at all.

Piggyback is not recommend.

Mine PC gamer got pretty low pings as 10ms thru WIRED and netflix on PS3 and iPad at same time and both smooth thru WIFI. We are very happy with it so far.

Again it's all depend on firmware and hardware type.

Funny, I don't have any problems with my router and it's blazing fast too as well. I guess some people got bad ones.

I still consider to buy dual band wireless router for using MacBook Pro, iPad 2, iPhone, jailbroken Apple TV 2, nTouch PC on PC notebook and VP200. Netgear dual-band router (WNDR3700 or WNDR4000) is better than DLink DIR-825? VP 200's video is pixelated and signal loss while video streaming is download. What do you think about it?

I use the 5ghz band on my WNDR3700, just keep in mind that the range isnt that great on that band but if you cant run cables its a reasonable alternative

I don't think you need dual bands since all of your protects are WIFI N ready.

Dual bands don't mean to speed up. It's mean use WIFI G and WIFI N at same time. Single band mean G only or N only, Can't do both.

I recommend to use WIFI N for VP200.

Dual band is good if they have lots on 2.4ghz stuff in the house as they can interfere

I have a Netgear WNDR3700 for two years and it works well with my computer. My iphone has WIFI off my router and I have no problem so far.

I still have Motorola SB6120 with DOCSIS 3.0 as well.

If my stupid Acer netbook battery works well wirelessly, but unfortunately, it does not work. If I have enough money, I would buy a Macbook pro laptop and use it wirelessly for sure.

Yesterday, I finally bought new router, Asus RT-N53 for $84. Router setup is pretty easy and straightfoward. My son noticed big difference in online game, no lags!! He's happy about it and my ZOjo look clean and smooth on my side what my friend told me. The download speed was wonderful. BUT the upload speed seem straining. I have 25mpbs download and 5mbps upload under SureWest plan. I've retested Speedtest several time in different times but still get 1.5 mbps upload maximum. I would like to open up upload speed to 4.5 mpbs. FYI, router's firewall is on (factory preset) and I went in EzQoS setting and selected Media and Internet. If you own Asus and know how to do it. Let me know

You have right complained to SureWest Plan about your upload issue or your modem need replace or bad cable/line from the outside.

No. I just found out I was using EzQoS enabled (Internet and Media). I did factory reset Asus router through web setup and firewall was on.. I turned on QoS like I mentioned and still had slow upload. I decide later in evening after work, working with my friend (my ZVRS co-worker) and I just found out QoS needed to be turned off and while firewall is on, I still get slow upload. I decide to turn off firewall. BINGO!!! Upload shot up and video was so much better as he told me.

Basically, turn off any QoS in EZ QoS setup and turn off Firewall. Then you're flying in internet.

AirPort Extreme Base Station vs D-Link DIR 655

AirPort Extreme Station router is easy setup with Macbook, Apple TV and iPhone/iPad and dual band (2.4 & 5.0 ghz). But it costs more than 2x the price of the DIR-655. It s better than DIR-655?? Do you have AirPort router? I consider to buy it. I will look for low cost item in eBay and Amazon.

I have DIR-655, it works perfectly with all of the devices including my MacBook Pro and PS3.
