Hi to all,

My Dlink DIR-655 version A4 broke, It'll work with WIRED connection just fine but Wireless is shot. I did factory reset and it still don't transmit wireless N signal nor G signal. Wireless in the setting is already on. I guess the wireless chipset was shot for some reason. I did the speed test before it broke, It went 1.20 mbps DL and 1.30 mpbs UPload. I decided to connect Modem directly to my laptop and speed test went full 25mbps DL and 4 mbps Upload with no hitch and 6ms ping. That was dang fast. I unhooked ethernet from laptop and plugged to WAN port of DIR 655 router. I got into its firmware and trying to figure out what's slowing down network speed. QOS engine been turned off, Firewall SPI was unchecked also in same setting page, upload and download "independent" were full open. Its firmware is 1.35NA which was the most recent. It worked fine till now. I don't know how did it happened so I had to switch back to old Belkin N Wireless router.

The reason why I was messing with DIR 655 because Youtube and other video kept loading with spinning dot icon every time and it's sooo annoying!! Also my VP show pixelized video sometime. I was trying to open up firewall and other setting but it somehow killed the wireless chipset.

Luckily, I have old Belkin N Wireless Router as a backup, It's been collecting dust in electronics junks box. I decide to do factory reset the router then turn off Firewall, set admin password, and changed Router's SSID to "Cisco" then set up WPA to exact same password as before. So that I don't have to do all changes on every laptops and Wireless N Bridge. Sure does save my trouble. (Reason why I had "Cisco" because I had Cisco Talent M10 router that I got free from ZVRS but it crashes every now and then under heavy network load and I gave up and switched back to DIR 655. Now it's on loan to my friend cuz she have buggy DIR 655 Version B <<--- sucky one!)

I did speedtest through Belkin wireless N connection to my laptop's Wireless N adapter and sure enough, the speed went to my ISP's full speed UPload and Download like I did while connected directly to Modem.. NO wonder!!

I don't want to use either Belkin N Router nor Cisco Talent M10. I wanted the gaming router or heavy duty router that withstand heavy use. Also I wanted Dual channel (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) for HiDef connection to new DIR 1522 Dual Channel Bridge/AP for my VP.

I basically want solid wireless N router that can do WIDE OPEN Throttle speed rather than bottle necking speed through it.
It must be compatible to SIP VP, I uses ZVRS VP

I do not want switch ZVRS to Sorenson or any other VP. ZVRS is just perfectly fine with my Cable Broadband, It's my DIR 655 problem.

Suggestion on Dual Channel Wireless N Routers?? Linksys, Netgear, Dlink, Cisco ect ect...

Snap! I need a new router myself. Chap in shop recommended Netgear and told me to stay clear of Belkin. I don't have that much technical knowledge so can't personally advise you purplecatty. Chap in shop also recommended that I buy a separate wireless AP instead of an integrated wireless router (I want to use both wired and wireless channels). Any experts out there who can comment on this solution?

check out the Asus RT-N56U Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless-N Router. Its a workhorse router without the bells and whistles. exactly what you need. has the hardware based nat configuration you want for videophones.

My personal experience with routers cuz Im a part time ZVRS installer. Ive seen separate routers can cause adverse effect to VP video quality. Daisy chaining routers will dilute broadband speed as well. Its best to stick with one router if you have VP. The reason why I need to know the most recent and updated wirelss N dual band router is because I am one of few deafie who have Wireless N Bridge/AP for VP. It worked like wonder. But my DIR-655 was not a Dual Band so I am just edging out a lust to use Dual Band Router for best quality on VP wirelessly if I use Z20 or ZOjo.

Sometime hearing computer technician do not know much about requirement for vp quality.

I already steer clear on Belkin two years ago as soon as I got Z340. Belkin cause problem with VP so I bought DIR-655 rev A two years ago and had no issue. I told lot deafie to stay away from Belkin!!

:hmm: sounds good. I will check this out. I THINK I saw best gaming routers on youtube. Asus is one of them. Worth a try!!

Never buy cheap router for heavy bandwidths as VP, gamer, and video streaming.

I like Linksys E4200 and ASUS RT-N56U, they are high reviews

I never like that idea of separate routers. I don't understand why most SVRS and ZVRS installers do that. It's not professional job.

I got free DIR-655 from ZVRS and I am not happy with it because there is no dual bands. Our Macbook,Macbook Air, Mini Mac, and iPad 1 are WIFI N ready. I just got brand new PS3slim in few months ago and It don't have WIFI N ready yet. I just don't believe that all Apple products already have WIFI N in 4 years ago and PS3 slim still don't have WIFI N yet. ugh. I had changed WIFI to G for stupid PS3 but PS3 is very nice view for Netflix with subtitles and blu-ray disc for 42" LCD.

Yes, I can understand that some installer did setup which was "scary". I had to go over and fix the problems. I have warned installer that never never daisy chain routers or plug ethernet on one of two router. Basic rule are that clean up the ethernet wire mess. Be surprised that several Ethernet wires went nowhere so remove it and considolate it to one Router. What you got DIR-655 version B was buggy one. Blame it all to Dlink for stupid screw ups on DIR-655. Mine was version A4 and had no issue till it kaput itself. You can request refund to ZVRS if you bought Dlink router from them.

Sorry to hear about you had to change to G mode on apple airport. I thougbt you set to full band b,g,n on airport, don't you have it in settings?? I never had issue with my DIR-655 running band b,g,n when I had PS3 on wireless g connection to my router while rest of other running on N connection same time.. No problem whatsoever.

My DLink Dir 615 died in the middle of things just last week. I have a new combo router/modem from AT&T. It's been running now for about 5 days, and I have to reset it almost daily.

My old apple airport become disconnection issue/sometime power went shut down after two years later due age and heavy bandwidths user. So I had to replaced the new router to solve a problem.

It's common for ATT router/modem to crash due to vp's high video compression. I wish they have been more considerate for deaf to have more solid heavy duty Router/Modem that would not crash on them.

I had used Dlink DIR-655 router but had problem with wireless network on it. This wireless network won't work to be connected with MacBook Pro sometimes. I replaced other DLink DIR-625 and it worked fine. DIR-655 is awful.

Hmm.. can you try to downgrade and flash old firmware? Yeah, it's not possible with all firmware and routers but just research and see if you can do it, Catty. Might save you a shot if it's a software problem.

Other than that only other thoughts I can say is the PCB or wireless semiconductor/chip is going bad.

I would give the DLink WNDR3700 some thought too, we run it at home and the performance has been flawless, cant recommend it enough.

I use a DIR 655 and I had problems with firmware, but after upgrading the firmware it worked fine. I would think that today any top of the line router is up to speed with wireless N protocol although I would still check the specs. I believe newer routers can now handle video streaming which is also something to consider if you are setting up equipment to view video such and movies wirelessly within your home network.

One other thing I would also consider is moving to a DOCIS 3.0 modem as some providers are putting out 25 mbs and you want to take advantage of it.

EDIT: P.S. Whatever router you get make sure you NIC card can handle it. That is the real question, otherwise, you are going to need all new NICs as well.

what s version of DIR 655 firmware? I like DOCIS 3.0 modem which Time Warner is 50 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream wideband service but Time Warner Cable Wideband Internet is costly about $100/mo.

I think I'm on the latest, but I'm not sure. Comcast doesn't give me 50 Mps, but they did up their service to 25 Mps and I get it for free because my modem can take it. Just tell them you bought a new modem and have them put that in their network. I don't rent a modem from them because it is crazy to do so. You buy a modem for $100 instead of paying them $11 a month and the second year you save over $100.

I also got rid of cable and just use internet now, saves $800 a year. The cable companies are criminals.

I've had DIR-655 for at least 3 years, I have MacBook Pro computers at home and I've never had any problems connecting to the router. In fact, there are a lot of devices that are connected to the router and they are all working just fine.

Don't mean he have exactly same firmware or hardware type (A or B or C) as you have. He may have a bad firmware or bad hardware type.

What firmware and type your DIR-655 is?

Mine firmware 2.01NA and B1 and it is 100% stable with iPad,PS3, Macbook, Macbook Air, and Mini Mac thru wireless.
