High drama in roller coaster rescue | Travel News | News.com.au

THRILL seekers were left clinging to a roller coaster 21m off the ground after it malfunctioned.

Up to 24 people were suspended on the Invertigo at the Great America Theme Park in Santa Clara, northern California.

The inverted roller coaster, which reaches speeds of up to 80kmh, stalled on an incline leaving riders with their feet dangling.

One woman trapped on the roller coaster posted her experience on Twitter, saying: "Watching some kid three rows ahead of you puke it all over the gathering spectators 40 feet below: PRICELESS."

The post, by Cynful1, said she felt "like a cherry in the roller coaster tree of life".

And her frustration was evident when she shared this thought: "This MotherF***ing SAFETY BAR on this MotherF***ing ROLLER COASTER is keeping me from reaching my MotherF***ing LIP GLOSS!"

The riders were freed three hours later when the Santa Clara Fire Department winched fireman up to the roller coaster.

The department's vertical rescue team had to release each rider manually from the safety harness keeping them attached to the roller coaster.

"Oh Mr. Fireman PICK ME! PICK ME!" wrote Cynful1 in her Twitter post.

It is the third time the Invertigo has broken down since it opened in 1998.

In June, 2000, it suddenly halted as it was about to plunge down the first descent.

The roller coaster jammed again in July, 2001, this time at 42m.

that roller coaster should be permanently shut down and dismantled

24 passengers get stuck on California roller coaster
24 passengers get stuck on California roller coaster - CNN.com

A mechanical failure on a roller coaster at a Santa Clara, California, amusement park Monday afternoon left 24 people stranded for hours on the ride, some as high as 80 feet off the ground, authorities said.

"The ride was ascending to the highest point of the ride, actually where it begins, and then it just stopped," Augie Wiedemann, deputy fire chief of the city, said. No injuries were reported from the incident.

The Invertigo ride at Great America Theme Park stopped at about 12:15 p.m. and the passengers were stuck for at least three hours, he said. Eleven passengers had gotten off the ride by about 4 p.m., while the rest were expected to be removed within the next two hours, Wiedemann added.

Video from CNN affiliate KGO showed firefighters removing passengers from the ride's restraint system and lowering them into a basket at the top of a fire truck.

"We work in the off season with park personal to prepare for things like this," Wiedemann said. "You can see that in how well the rescue operation is going."

Passengers were given water as they waited in 90-degree heat to prevent dehydration.

The theme park did not immediately issue a statement or return calls for comment.

People who go to amusement park and go on rides are on their own risk.

I don't think they should let people on the rides with faulty history. this ride's got 3 strikes and it's OOOOOUUUUUUUUTTTTT!

Yeah I agree, but I just pointed out that this kind of ride is dangerous and people ride on own risk unless they find proof that the operator is negligent or faulty equipment, then that is one way ticket to the court.

Yea, I don't think unreliable amusement park rides should be in service as well like Jiro said. I haven't ridden that, thank god. I rode a few coasters at Great America in California, but not that one.

Now, people can twit about their experiences being stuck....interesting.
