You know that people often shovel away snow to clear parking space on street and then put up chairs to "reserve" their space.

What do you think? Do you think people are right to reserve their spaces? Would you move aside those chairs and park there?

I would love to hear some funny stories. I see a lot of spaces being reserved in Chicago. I don't know about other areas, though.

People do that in my city too , they'll put their trash cans in the street to save a spot . I will move the trash can because the street belong to everyone . Now only residents that live on certain streets can park there all day and not get a ticket , if you do not live the street you can only park on it for 2 hours . There are lot houses that do not have driveways so people get very upset about people taking 'their' parking space. About the only good thing about my condo is that we having off street parking.

You know that's illegal here, right? They're not supposed to be doing that.

Not in the past, no, but when Mayor Emanual took over, he made it clear he was gonna enforce the rules, and I don't think he was kidding, either.

No one takes the chairs?

My city has a festival every summer and there is a parade on the last day.
People put all kinds of chairs along the sidewalks at least 3 before the parade
to hold a spot and no one take the chairs . People leave at least 5 or more chairs and run a rope through them .

funeral homes can do it , they can reserve parking spaces for a funeral , we have a funeral home that take up parking spaces at an eyes DR. parking lot too and that is wrong .

as a kid, now this is back in early 70's... people did that in St. Louis City and homeowners all owned their homes in the hood back then. Now its mixed of renters and all who have several friends over all the time so parking is scarce... some did but the homeowners have the rights to park over the renters so called visitors/friends, the homeowners would remove the chairs renters put up and you guessed it... Kung Fu would bust out everywhere !!!!!

Funerals, sure. Regular people? Not a chance, cause the garbage crew would toss it in the big ole stinky truck.

I didn't realize that Emanual made changes. I don't remember seeing one chair this year. Then again, I've not been in Chicago for all those snow storms this year. I steer clear of city.

I mean, the renters have their space but try to save one for a friend and homeowner wants to park so they move it. Its usually the renter starting the fight and they lose all around as its illegal to do for one, the homeowner "owns" their home and have the right to park on the street or at least close to their house.. the renters have no right to "save" spaces for their friends. And most people/Families have 1 or more vehicles which adds to it as well. I always parked in my garage when I lived in the city, but alot of homes dont have that option.

Hmm. Well, that doesn't happen here too often, because this neighborhood has garages in the alleyway, and those are very common around this area. You will see a lot of alleyway garages around Rogers Park.

Yeah but I do not feel is right for a funeral home to use a DR. parking lot too. That mean the DR. patients have to drive around to find a place to park their cars . People bring their chairs back home , there may few chairs that get left behind . The garbage crew do pick up the chairs, no one bother them. People been doing this for years.

SO how does he enforce the rules? I would put up chairs and then walk away. I can deny that I put those chairs up. How does it get enforced if you're not sure who put those chairs up?

If there's stuff sitting in the roadways, the garbage crews are to pick them up and toss them in the back of the truck. People aren't happy about this, but he means business.

This does not make sense to me. How do you even know which residence is owner occupied and which is occupied by a renter? I would think both would be having guests over at times.

Part of this comes from growing up in a house my folks rented from the time I was in 2nd grade through into my senior year of high school. Several expressed surprise when I said that we moved because the house was sold. They then said they had thought we owned it.

Do you mean the funeral home parks their hearses and limo in the doctor's parking lot? Or do you mean guests of the funeral home take it upon themselves to park there without permission? Is the doctor aware of them using his private parking lot?

Leaving chairs or any objects in the road in this area is illegal. If someone wants to reserve a parking spot for a special event or purpose they need to get permission from the police department. When someone with a business, like Hubby has, needs to park at the curb he has to go the day before and lease a cover and padlock. Then he uses that to reserve the space. When he's done, he takes the cover back to the PD.

Residents (owners and renters) have to buy parking decals.
