If you currently wear two CIs OR a CI and a hearing aid in the opposite ear, you may be eligible to participate in a research study being conducted by Kristi A. Buckley, Ph.D., CCC-A at the Center for Hearing and Deafness at the University at Buffalo.
The study examines how the brain is able to combine different sounds in each ear. The results from this study could lead to improvements in fitting procedures for bilateral cochlear implant (CI) and/or bimodal users.
We are looking for individuals between the ages of 18 to 65 years who wear either two CIs or a CI in one ear and a hearing aid in the opposite ear. The study consists of one visit to the University at Buffalo South Campus (Main/Bailey campus). Should you choose to participate, you would be asked to complete hearing and speech tests, similar to those performed at regular audiological evaluations. In addition, you would be asked to listen and respond to different sounds by pushing a button. During this time, a cap with sensors (electrodes) would be placed on your head to record your brainwaves in response to these sounds.
This testing will NOT affect the function of your CI(s) in any way!
The study would take about 3 to 4 hours to complete and you would be compensated for your time. If you would be driving between 50-200 miles each way, we would also reimburse you for mileage. We recognize the need to schedule appointment times based on your schedule and will work hard to arrange a convenient time for you to participate.
If you or anyone you know have any questions regarding this study or would like more information, please feel free to call Christina Lobarinas or Jennifer Pyo at (716) 829-5561 or email us at ListeningWithTwoEars@gmail.com.
