Hello everybody! .
My name is Renske, I'm 25 yrs old and I'm from the Netherlands. I have been wearing hearing aids since I was a toddler, but unfortunately my hearing got worse through the years so now I'm wearing a hearing aid in my left ear and - since last Friday - a CI on the right side (AB Harmony). I really didn't expect much, but at least I expected the voices to sound like Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck (that's what I read on a Dutch CI discussion board). But it didn't even come close to that and I couldn't wait 'til I came home to take my CI off. During the second mapping the audiologist told me to wear the CI as much as possible, otherwise my brain would never get the chance to get used to it. So that's what I've been doing since Monday: try to wear it all day long and avoid wearing my hearing aid as much as possible. The quality of the sound hasn't changed much since Friday (everything still sounds very metallic), but I notice that I'm starting to discriminate sounds. I still can't believe that there will be a time when I can actually HEAR what someone says (instead of reading his / her lips).
It's great to be able to share my experiences with others
