Girl's Suicide Attempt Kills Woman, Police Say

ATLANTA (Oct. 20) - A teen-age girl counted down her suicide attempt through text messages to a female classmate, who had rebuffed her sexual advances, before crashing her car into an oncoming vehicle, killing a mother of three, prosecutors said.

If convicted, the suspect faces an automatic life sentence.

Crash Kills Mother

Louise Egan Brunstad, 16, was charged Thursday with felony murder. Prosecutors said they intend to try her as an adult. If convicted, she faces an automatic life sentence.

"She was actually counting down her imminent threat: 'Nine, eight, seven, six ... I'm going to do it,' " said Paul Howard, Fulton County district attorney.

Authorities said Brunstad rammed her family's Mercedes-Benz head-on into a smaller Daewoo driven by 30-year-old Nancy Salado-Mayo, who was killed. Salado-Mayo's middle child, Lesly, 6, was in a child safety seat and was treated for fractured ribs and other injuries.

Brunstad, who was treated for an ankle injury, had told friends she planned to kill herself after another female student at Holy Innocents Episcopal School refused to have sex with her, Howard said.

Witnesses told police the girl never slowed as she crossed over a turning lane and into oncoming traffic on busy Roswell Road in Atlanta's upscale Buckhead neighborhood on Oct. 4.

"She was traveling at a high rate of speed," Howard said. "This is an intentional action."

The girl's attorney, Drew Findling, declined to discuss the allegations but expressed the family's sadness over the accident.

"This young lady and her parents are devastated by this horrible accident and by the death of Mrs. Salado-Mayo and the injuries of her daughter," Findling said. "They are praying for the quick and healthy recovery of her daughter and for the well-being of her husband and other children."

After a memorial service in Atlanta, Salado-Mayo's body was returned to her native Mexico for burial. Her husband, Mario Bibiano, a steel worker, was unable to attend the funeral because he remained by his daughter's bedside at an Atlanta hospital.

Brunstad was on crutches in court Thursday for a brief hearing on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. Howard said she is being held at a mental health facility, and is wearing an electronic monitor around her ankle to prevent her from running away.

Police say teen's fatal wreck was suicide try

A 16-year-old girl accused of killing a mother of three in a Roswell Road crash two weeks ago was using her family's 2003 Mercedes as an instrument of suicide, never letting off the accelerator as she slammed into the oncoming car, authorities said Thursday.

The teen, Louise Egan Brunstad, survived the crash with minor injuries but on Thursday was charged with felony murder. Prosecutors intend to try her as an adult, and she faces an automatic life sentence if convicted.

The student at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School in Sandy Springs had been moved to despair after a fellow student rejected her romantic advances, prosecutors said. She was driving the Mercedes north on Roswell Road when she crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a car driven by Nancy Salado-Mayo.

Before hitting the gas, Brunstad had sent a text message to the student she had a crush on, said Paul Howard, the Fulton County district attorney. "She was actually counting down her imminent threat: 'Nine, eight, seven, six ... I'm going to do it.' "

Salado-Mayo, 30, was killed, and her 6-year-old daughter, Lesly, suffered fractured ribs and other injuries.

Rescuers who pulled the child from the crumpled 1999 Daewoo marveled that she wasn't hurt worse in the nearly head-on collision, according to the police report. She had been restrained in a safety seat.
Salado-Mayo was on her way to check her work schedule at the Jason's Deli in Buckhead at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 4, where she had a job preparing food and stocking the salad bar.

Howard said he had decided to prosecute Brunstad as an adult because he believes she drove into traffic without regard for the safety of others. "She was traveling at a high rate of speed," he said. "This is an intentional action."

Brunstad told students, including the girl who had rebuffed her, that she intended to kill herself the day of the crash, Howard said. "I don't know if the other students took it seriously enough to try to stop her," he said.

William Brunstad did not want to discuss his daughter's situation Thursday. "This is a real bad time," Brunstad said. "I cannot talk."

Brunstad, a real estate attorney with the Atlanta firm Dominion Capital Management LLC and his family live in a quiet neighborhood off Peachtree-Dunwoody Road in Buckhead.

Drew Findling, the family's high-profile criminal attorney, declined to discuss the allegations but said the family wasn't taking the incident lightly.

"This young lady and her parents are devastated by this horrible accident and by the death of Mrs. Salado-Mayo and the injuries of her daughter," Findling said. "They are praying for the quick and healthy recovery of her daughter and for the well-being of her husband and other children."

At his modest Sandy Springs apartment, Mario Bibiano, Salado-Mayo's husband, was still trying to comprehend what had happened.

"The great suffering that I'm going through now is very difficult," Bibiano said during an interview in Spanish. "If she wanted to kill herself, why did she have to hurt others?"

Bibiano, a steel worker, was unable to attend his wife's funeral in Mexico because he remained in Atlanta by his daughter's hospital bedside. The child suffered a torn artery near her lungs and has vision problems, Bibiano said. She is also traumatized by the death of her mother, he said.

In two weeks Bibiano's parents will create an altar in their home in Mexico to honor his wife on Day of the Dead, a national Mexican holiday.

Bibiano and his wife are immigrants from San Marcos, Mexico, who came to Atlanta nine years ago. They had a relative here and wanted to better their lives, he said. Atlanta has attracted a large community of laborers from the small city of San Marcos, in the Mexican state of Guerrero.

Bibiano and his wife came with their oldest child. Their two younger children were born here and are U.S. citizens.

Salado-Mayo was well regarded at her job. "You could tell she was well-liked and a hard worker," said Jeremy Bennett, the manager at Jason's Deli.

Louise Egan Brunstad, who was treated for an ankle injury from the crash, hobbled into court Thursday morning on crutches for a brief hearing. The judge transferred the felony murder and aggravated assault charges to adult court.

The girl is being held at a mental health facility, Howard said. She wears an electronic monitoring device around her ankle to prevent her from running away.

Howard said he intends to seek a grand jury indictment against her within the next 30 days.

Holy Innocents', where Brunstad played on the basketball team and ran track, is a private school in an affluent area of Sandy Springs.

Students and parents on Thursday afternoon were reluctant to speak about the incident, saying they didn't want to upset the school administration or didn't know enough to comment.

Last week, after the accident, an announcement had been made at the school, several students said. But no announcement was made Thursday, they said.

Andrew Payne, the school's director of communication, expressed remorse but declined further comment. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families as they move through this painful and difficult time in their lives," Payne wrote in an e-mail.

she harassed the girl for sex.
she crashed up the family car.
she killed a woman.
she injured an innocent child.
she threw her life away....

And for what? for sex? come on, what is this world coming to?:ugh3:

oh my gosh.. i read this in news.. this is not good.. now im sure that girl wish she tried something else .. but still stupid thing to do! i felt bad for the kid lost eye and lost his/her momma! :(

Lets look at this logically, shall we?

We have a teenager who has emotional problems. I would look at that, and not focus on the fact that she propositioned a woman for sex. That's irrelevant.

This girl sounds irrational, and she probably would have not handled it well if a guy had rejected her advances.

Simply put, she's troubled and should be placed in a secure environment, so she can't harm anybody else. This is a case where a "guilty but insane" verdict applies.

She has problems, but she also willfully took the life of another. Get her treatment, but then she should spend time behind bars reflecting on what she's done.

If she wants a fair trial... and want to be treated as everyone else...
Then she should spend life in prison and if in good behavior, she can
get out at the age of 30.
