CHICAGO -- A new study finds that older Americans who eat large amounts of red and processed meats face a greater risk of death from heart disease and cancer.

The study of a half-million men and women -- ages 50 to 71 years old -- is the largest of its kind.

It found that over 10 years, eating the equivalent of a quarter-pound hamburger each day gave men a 22 percent higher risk of dying of cancer. It gave them a 27 percent higher risk of dying of heart disease.

That's compared to those who ate just 5 ounces of red meat a week.

Women who ate large amounts of red meat had a 50 percent higher risk of dying of heart disease than women who ate less. They had a 20 percent higher risk of dying of cancer.

The findings appear in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.

Interesting! Glad that I am not really eating red meat often! :)

Funny, I just finished reading about the study in the Washington Post paper. I can't even remember the last time I ate red meat. :hmm:

Guess I'll have to die from something else. :P

Who cares but life is too short.

I do eat alot of red meat like hamburger, hamburger helper, beef taco and others.

ha ha same here. lots of people who we know are used to be healthy freak and the results were they died of many unknown causes or cancers.

But if someone happens to have disease conditions cause by the red meat then they just cut down on red meats or nothing. I don't know if they will get better from stopping to eat red meats. i am not a doctor, for sure.

again, life is so short.

Where is the source? I can tell they're 50% wrong.

Good thing I don't eat much red meat. I usually eat an average of 5 to 10 ounces of red meat a week... sometimes more depending on the occasion. I usually eat white meat like chicken. :)

I rarely eat red meat, but then anyone can die other way though. We can't lower our risks of dying.

Well, I guess it's a good thing that I don't eat that much red meat....I'm not really fond of them and I have to use sauce on the red meat just to be able to eat it.

I'm a carnivore, and proud of it, but I don't eat meat three meals a day or whatever. I don't want to be falling out a window on a high-rise and wishing I'd eaten that second slice of pizza. :D

and by the way, just about everything that tastes good is bad for you, and just about everything you eat or breathe or drink increases your mortality risk. I don't pay attention to those studies anymore.

I will never give up red meat...love it too much. However, I dont eat it on a daily basis.
