I went to the audiologist and she had me take out both of my hearing aids. I realized something, not being able to hear, even a little bit was one of the things that really made me feel insecure. I hated not knowing what was going on around me. So I desperately want to learn sign language. Is there anyone who would like to teach me by webcam? I can't rely on hearing aids all the time.

ummm there should be lesson at your local community college?no?

You're probably better off attending deaf socials in your area.

Do you have a Deaf Chat Coffee nearby? They occur once a month at one location. Some places have at least 2 locations in the area and happen on different days.

For instance, I live near 3 locations that occur on separate Fridays. :)

I can try and explain it in words that would teach you. I'm good at describing, but it takes time because I want it to be clear and solid.

I know what you mean about not being able to hear and being scared about that. I never used to be scared about not being able to hear when I took my aids out but 2 nights ago it scared me. Long story short, My daughter pee'd the bed around midnight. I went down and went outside to have a smoke and came back in, locked the door. My son woke up at 3am and carried his blanket down and went back to sleep on the chair, which he has done many a time. I went down to check on him right away though cuz he's only 4. I went to go smoke outside again and my door was open!!! There's a kitchen window next to the door and I was stupid and didn't lock it so one could lift the screen and reach the door lock. I went back upstairs for my HAs and I could smell a man had gone up my stairs. I had to search the house and all. I asked my son if he opened the door and he said no. I believe him. So, I felt like crap knowing that I can not hear w/out my HA. I should have gotten the hearing dog, damnit.

It's really scary!! My hardest time is while I go to WalMart to do my shopping. I can't hear the cars coming. I do stay to a side while going across the parking lot, but I still have been almost hit 3 or 4 times. I miss hearing music and hearing my kids. Most especially can't hear hubby tell me he loves me during the night. That's rough.

I can understand. My boyfriend has to get right next to me and tell me. I can't hear him but I have learned to understand the pattern of his words. :) Walmart sucks, even if you do see the cars coming, they speed up like they really do want to hit you.

I would recommend on taking ASL classes in your area or nearby. Check into any community colleges, even night schools at high schools and/or colleges to find out about ASL classes.

I don't have any deaf schools in my area, and my local colleges don't teach ASL. So, I ordered a SEE dictionary and learned SEE vocabulary straight out of the dictionary in about 2 weeks, and am now smoothing it out. It makes be feel good to be able to communicate. I still plan to learn ASL as soon as I can find a very good way to learn it without leaving my home valley. I expect to take many years to learn ASL instead of just 2 weeks, but people might not think I'm such a loser if I learn a language separate from English for some reason. Perhaps you can do what I did.

I don't think you should worry too much. Your hearing may not deteriorate to a level where you cannot hear at all. Who knows? And, if you do lose all your hearing, then you can always look into CI. Also, the fact that more people have some degree of hearing loss today, we can expect to see scientific breakthroughs in the future.
