hi

does anyone know the stats for eating disorder in the DEAF community?

I'm not sure they have specific stats on whether a certain percentage is in the deaf community or not. There are stats on general people who do, but I don't think it's broken down by deaf and hearing. It might be broken down by ethnicity or nationality.

I've never heard of it broken down by deaf/hearing or anything either.

I've heard of it done by countries and whatnot though, like Kristina said. I have information on that, if that's something else you might be interested in.

nah i want to the rates of eating disorders within the deaf community as
their seem to be a lack of edus with asl or staff who sign. i use the Rochester method(verbal English with every word finger spelled at the same time) similar to simcom

Perhaps you can find on Gallduet's research site?

I'll ask my friend if she knows of such stats. She works in that field.

Rochester Method makes me want to remove my eyes from my skull and throw in a fish tank filled with electric eels, while the nerves are still attached a functioning - because that would be more pleasurable and tolerable than the Rochester Method. HOW on earth do you communicate that way on a regular basis?

And to kind of address the question, there is a lack of staff who sign everywhere and in every feild.

Saw it before in real-life, eh?

I know. Me too. I don't like fingerspelling all that often either.

Do you have a therapist or a physician who can help you find appropriate treatment? It seems like an overwhelming task to find an appropriate program on your own. Best of luck!

dreams are free i am looking into the mercy ministries or rainrock more likely rainrock in couple of years

OK i have had my assessment and due to speech difficulties(mine) the report needs heavy editing but the assessment diagnosed right eating disorder not otherwise specified. i have been refereed to a community based team. But i feel that outpatient treatment wont be enough and cos i cant focus long enough to work i wont be able to afford specialist holistic care and treatment i need.

I've never seen hearing status used as a demographic for eating disorders. However, the rate of anxiety disorders is higher in the deaf population, and eating disorder contain a large component of anxiety.

ednos with binging (so starvation, throwing up and binging) so embarrassing

I haven't heard of any kind of survey being made on this thing.

Although, I'm sure that they would find something different since deaf culture often leads to overdoing or "underdoing" some things in a way.

For instance, I've seen situations where some deaf people swear a lot more... because they're trying to fit into the hearing culture. When they see a hearing person swear a few words, they think that by swearing more... they can be easily accepted within the hearing community. What they don't know is that this kind of approach doesn't always work.

So, with eating disorders... it could depend on the deaf person's well-being. If they did find something, they would also have to include research on deaf people's education, social upbringing, etc... and include those stats with their stats for eating disorders.
