Hello everyone my name is Jennifer
Im doing a homework assignement for my ASL Culture class at MSJC.
I hope none of these questions offend anyone, that is not my intention. Our teacher gave us a survey assignment. I have six questions i have to ask a deaf person. I hope someone can help and once again i dont mean to insult anyone.
1. Do you think ASl is a real language?
2. Does society treat you different?
3. How do you dance without music?
4. Should hearing parents of deaf children learn to sign ASL?
5. Should movie theaterds have captions?
6. Who should pay interpreters and what should their pay range be?

here's my answers :) Hope they help :)

1. Yes, I believe ASL is a real language with it's own way of communicating.

2. Generally, for me No.. They may adjust how they do certain things, but in general, I make them treat me equally with hearing peers/counterparts.. I force them to see me as a person, not a "broken doll".

3. This is a funny story for me.. I usually just feel the beat. Or if I know the song, I dance my interpretion of the song.. my boyfriend who's hearing is always amazed that i'm so good at it... because my dancing usually matches the song almost perfectly.

4. Well, I think they should, but most parents may choose not to, for whatever reason. My mother choose not to learn ASL. And i respect her decision.

5. Yes.. I do think theaters should have captioning. But personally, I don't go to the movies because of claustophobia..

6. I think it depends on the situation.. Doctors, employers, ect.. should pay for interpreters for their deaf clients.. but if you are hiring one for a personal event like a wedding or family reunion or whatnot.. you should pay for it yourself.

Hope this helps. Have a good day :) And none seemed offensive to me..

Thanks

Thank you for helping me. I learned something new. I went into a chat room and i asked the question about how do you dance without music and a lady there came off a lil rude. I mean the question is in the book i told them i didnt mean to offend anyone. I thought that question was a little weird but i didnt think she should have taken it that way. But i didnt know thats how you could dance. I think thats kool and i think that its kool that your dancing almost matches the music. Wish i could do that...my dancing doesnt match the music at all hahaha...

Usually with my dancing.. i will feel and learn the beats of the song a few times, and then dance those beats. it depends on each deaf person. And there is a way of thinking I've noticed, people don't think Deaf people listen to music.. and I've seen some deaf people say they don't need music because they can't hear it.. I have to respectfully disagree with those people because they have the touch sense.. they can use that to feel the beat, and the bass, ect...

1. Do you think ASl is a real language?

Yes and it has been proven to be a real language with its own syntax and rules.
2. Does society treat you different?
Depending on the person..sometimes yes, sometimes no.
3. How do you dance without music?

I need the music blaring in order to be able to dance. I cant dance to silence so my HAs help some. Just cant understand the words to the lyrics that's all.

4. Should hearing parents of deaf children learn to sign ASL?
Yes and I have stated my reason why I believe in that in other threads.
5. Should movie theaterds have captions?
Yes due to having full access to everything. Why not?
6. Who should pay interpreters and what should their pay range be?
I dont know enough about the interpreting field to form an opinion about how and how much they should be paid.
