Questions and debates about blindness:

Yes I have some residual vision. I can see most stuff on on 16x magnification. When my eyes get tired I switch to screen reader.

i may have asked you this before nika, but can you see colors and/or the outline of large buildings?

do you have light perception nika or are you legally blind (meaning that you have more vision than light perception)? sorry, i don't remember.

Legally blind in my right eye, light perception/shadows in my left.

i apologize if it seems like i'm badgering nika. that isn't my intent. i don't know what or if he can see which is why i'm asking these questions. hope nika and everyone else understand.

actually nika, JAWS comes in a free demo version that runs for 45 minutes before you have to shut down your computer and reboot.

Sweet. Unfortunately at work we use PCs so I will ask my boss if the foundation is willing to pay for the full version of JAWS or Zoomtext. (Since I do translation to and from Farsi, I work with the Perso-Arabic script which I doubt JAWS reads.)

Yes I understand.

thank you, nika. that is all i wanted to ask you. thanks for answering my questions. i really appreciate it.

No problem. Sometimes I feel like it's easier to explain NLP (no light perception) blindness cause you can just tell people "I'm totally completely blind." Most sighted folks can't wrap their head around people who are somewhere between totally sighted and totally blind.

i know what you mean nika. that is where i do consider myself lucky. when you tell someone that you're totally blind, that's pretty self-explanatory. <laugh>

Parents are excellent at denying blindness just as they are excellent at denying deafness. Of course it depends on the parents, but it's definitely true that some blind folks spend their whole childhood trying to break through their parents' denial.

Yes I would say professionals are obsessed with residual vision. I know severeal folks that are legally registered as low vision even though they by far meet the requirements for legally blind (acuity 200/20 or worse; or field of vision less than 10 degrees with correction in the better eye).

:gpost:

You are so right!

i think all public schools should be taught and made aware of most disabilities and special needs like deafness, blindness etc..
Because more and more children are born or develop these problems and I dont see why the world still struggles to meet the needs of these children/people, many children and people have been struggling all these years, i guess it is a new thing but i hope in the future the school system improves so many children can benefit from being in public school and enjoy it and doesnt have to worry about their disability/ special needs. It is easy for schools to provide equipment for "normal" children, they should do it for others, its only fair. i would like to see a lot of schools actually providing equipment without fight.

Did you all have a good experience at school? Or was it hard? did you have to fight to get the braille or other equipment you might have needed?
