Hi everyone. My name is Deana. I am a sophomore in college and am currently enrolled in an intermediate sign language class. One of my assignments in the class is to write an essay over a controversal topic. My topic is should all deaf use speech? I do not believe that they should have to, but I was hoping to get the opinion of people who deal with it every day. Anyone and everyones opinion would be appreciated. Thanks :)

I'm not deaf, but I'm in ASL 1 in college. I believe that it's a personal choice wether or not all deaf people use speech. Or if their using a combination of sign languange or both.

I hope that I answered your question. I didn't know if you were looking for wehter society says that they should use speech, or whether it's their personal choice.

But either way I don't think that they should use speech if they don't want to.

Not all deaf people are able to acquire speech skills, so your paper just went nowhere.

It isn't possible.

I use both by the way.

You are correct.

Like Botts said, not all are able to acquire speech skills. My brother is one of them. He was in an oral-only program during his first five years and wasnt able to develop speech skills at all.

I think each deaf person should use whatever feels most natural to them. Signing, speech, bimodal. ASL, PSE, SEE. Whatever works for each individual is what they should use.

I assumed she meant "should all deaf try to learn speech?" In terms of educating children, I don't think all deaf people should be forced to learn speech, no. I think parents should really evaluate what works best for their deaf child and go from there. I agree with you. It's totally unrealistic to expect all deaf people to learn speech though.

Oh, oops, I bet you are right. I am an extremely literal thinker.

Thanks everyone for you opinion. I didn't mean a certain thing but the topic, thats exactly what it said when I chose it (We had four or five specific topics to choose from and write about). I was still trying to figure out how to present it. Like I originally said I don't believe they should have to and know that some cant.
