If you miss a doctor's appt., (slipped your mind), and didn't give a 24 hour notice....are you required to pay the $50 fee for the Interpretor, since he/she showed up, but you didn't?

This was a question I read on FB....where one lady had to pay a $100 fee....but not for a doctor's appt., it was for her daughter's soccer team....:hmm:

I remember last year my eye doctor billed me for $50 for the Interpretor....I paid that bill...When I questioned it, the office assistant told me that they had to pay for an Intrepretor, and since I didn't show up or call...I had to pay them back....

Always thought the Interpretor agency paid their Terps?....So do the doctors and hospitals pay the Agency?

Yes, all of doctors pay for terp services, thats why they made huge deal out of it. Its money losing for them because patient insuranve companies usually wont pay for cost of terp.
Agencies needs income to pay for terp, who pays? Usually its business owners that pay them.

If the missed appointment was for something that is covered by the ADA (such as a doctor's appointment), then the deaf patient shouldn't have to pay. If the missed appointment was for something not covered, such as a private event, then whomever scheduled the terp should pay.

Of course, enforcement of the rules is sometimes another matter. Doctors' office managers will sometimes try to get away with whatever they can, until someone pushes back.

Some terps work thru agencies (private and government), some are private practice (freelance). I've done both. The usual process is whomever hires the interpreter pays the agency or the private practice terp. If the terp works for an agency, the agency should pay the terp even when the hiring party is delinquent in paying their bill. It's up to the agency to collect from the hiring party for the bill. If the terp is private practice, it's up to the terp to collect on the bill.

But it's tax deductible, isn't it? ...This eye specialist (whom I was referred to), at first, said they did not have Interpretors for their deaf patients...Well, I needed one but they just "wrote"....I did tell them it was tax deductible...and finally, on the 3rd visit, I did have a Terp....after my eye surgery, I missed an appt., but called a few days later to explain and rescheduled...that's when I was hit with the $50 bill....
My primary doctor?...no charge for missed appts. (and I missed a few due to hospitalization. sickness, etc.)
