They do it for several reasons:
They have something to hide for a good or bad reason. So, leave it at that.
They think it makes them look better. If you think they're lying, then don't listen to them. It's like the story of the boy who cried wolf. If they lie repeatedly, then tell the truth... and you don't believe the truth... that's pretty much their own fault.
What lies should we care or not care about? It depends on what the lie is about.
If someone lies about their eye color or hair color, so what? They're probably ashamed of what they have or don't want people to know what they look like.
If someone lies about having friends, so what? They're probably just trying to make more friends and we should be friends with everyone.
However...
If someone lies about someone else in a harmful way, then ignore them because getting yourself involved will only make matters worse for you and others.
