Hi,

I would like to know if any younger children getting more CI than wearing hearing aids. I noticed in my home state that children wearing CI more often than hearing aids. I wondering why it having a big chance since I was younger. I was not sure if my daughter should get hearing aids or CI. I hate to send my daughter with hearing aids.. and other children around her have CI most. You know what I mean. Time changes. Long time ago, when I was wearing dumb hearing aid on my chest and i walked in.. most kids have aid behind the ear. All kids made fun of me wearing aid on my chest. Wow, that was many years ago. I dont want to see my daughter get into same situation as I did in the past.

Hi and welcome!

A large percentage of profoundly deaf children are getting CIs these days since there is on the whole a greater benefit from CIs than with hearing aids for this group. However you will find that if the loss is mild/moderate/severe the child will tend to get fitted with hearing aids. This is because in most cases CI surgery results in permanent loss of the residual hearing. With CIs you cannot turn back and return to hearing aids if it doesn't work out. Also for smaller hearing losses hearing aids are a good solution comparable to the results of a CI.

Cosmetic appearance of the device is not considered a valid reason for getting a CI and you would be hard pressed to convince a specialist to give you one on that ground alone.

What is your daughter's hearing loss? And how well is she currently doing with hearing aids? And how old is she?

Hope you can spend more time with us. I am a deaf adult who got my CI activated 7 weeks ago and I'm happy with my results so far! I did well with hearing aids but suddenly lost my residual hearing last year hence the CI.

As said above, CI is only an option when there's no benefit from HA's. It is not really the choice of one of the other.
On the other hand, I can imaging that the thresh-hold where CI are being provided is getting lower and lower.

But bullying is something that will happen most of the time. Either because of the HA, or the CI, or when these are not used, because he child can't hear/understand. And if these are not enough reasons to bully a child, some children will find another reason.....

But like R2D2 said, tell us some more about your child.

It depends on level of hearing loss but CI is good for children who are profound deaf.

Unfortuntly in our purely market driven healthcare system, there ARE parents who shop around til they find a doc or a clinic who will implant their kids.
I reconize that the CI rocks for lots of people..........but I still think that canidates for implantaton should be chosen conservatively. Like if a child gets a lot of benifit out of hearing aids, they should automaticly NOT be a canidate for implantation.
I actually think that there may have been an increase in implantation because of a relatively new dx, called auditory nereopathy. Kids with it, tend to benifit more from CIs then with hearing aids.

This is true. And if one looks hard enough, one will find a surgeon to do the implantation no matter what the motivation. Haven't heard of the new dx, deafdyke. Can you elaborate, please?

sjones4dad, welcome aboard! You have come to the right place and you will get valuable input from the "experts" on here! Some are parents, some are recent implantees, some have had their implants for a while -- you may find different opinions but keep your mind open and you will find a great wealth of information on here!
I first came on here with a closed mind against CI but because our son and his wife decided to have their son implanted, I was given the link to this forum and boy, oh boy this place opened my mind up!
I am still learning...

My daughter is almost 3. She is not taking well with hearing aids. Her hearing is profounded. Still need to work it more.

Thanks. I really appreciate. Where can I get more information about CI?

Well, about my daughter. I want to see her have a better life. I was in her age and being bully with hearing people making fun of wearing aids.

I noticed many hearing people supports on CI than hearing aids. I dont get it!

Why is that?

Yes, I noticed that from what i have looked up on internet about CI and it does benefit from CI than hearing aids. It is true.

It helps get to brain to understand every words you hear. Hearing aids doesnt get you into brain to hear every words. For hard of hearings can.. because they still can hear and better dhz than profounded.

We are deaf and I do not care what other deaf think. Against CI.

My wife does against CI. I talked to her about more deeply.. for my daughter's life. I asked my wife about her life. Are you happy being deaf??

I said myself for me.. no... when i was young and being pushy, bully, teasing, and depressing. I dont want to see my daughter in my shoes. I want my daughter to have own better life and being normal person like hearing. I thought about CI would be benefit for you.

For me, I always want to be hearing person. Many things that i want to do something but cant. Like joining Marines, riding jet pilot, etc..

You know what I meant.

I had a good experience with mainstream schools probably because I had a big ego :) I didn't care what my peers thought of me and when they thought they were better than I, it made me try harder to prove them wrong.

Your daughter, with hearing aids or CI, should do better than normal since she has two hearing siblings. That is important, talking and hearing at home after school!

Having a CI is not going to protect your child against any bullying that she may have received as a result of wearing hearing aids. Th external speech processor looks like a big hearing aid although some hearing people seem to think its a blue tooth thingy. In other words if your daughter experiences bullying it's best to address it through the school system rather than try and avoid it through a CI.

I would try and think of the CI as being a tool that allows you to hear, possibly better than hearing aids depending on the severity of your loss. If your daughter is not benefiting from hearing aids it sounds like she could get a lot more benefit from a CI so I would see if you can get an evaluation organised at a clinic. It would be best to approach your existing specialist and they can help refer you to a suitable clinic in your area.

You and your daughter will still be deaf with a CI. It destroys any residual hearing that you may have had. In fact it makes me laugh when other deaf people suggest that you've been "fixed" when you have a CI.

It's true... I lost residual hearing on right ear after got CI but totally 0% benefit for HA on right ear and 15% benefit on left ear. I tried to put HA on right ear and it hurt SO badly then I wouldn't wear on right ear.

Please don't wear HA on ear that had CI into it or it would hurt so badly but teacher forced me to take CI off and wear FM system on both ears then it hurt on my right ear and none of big tolenate with painful. My parent called school to stopped wear FM system for me then they refused to accept and parent said that would going sue on school but school is so scared and let me to quit wear FM system. I went to clinic and check my right ear because it was seriously hurt from FM system but it went away in around one week and got medicine. Now, I'm fine...

Maybe if you ask your wife to read this forum? When I first joined in May, I was totally against CI but when Fragmenter steered me here, I just sat in my chair and started reading the HA and Cochlear threads and read everything from the start to finish of almost all of the threads. Boy, was I converted! The arguments from all sides (I almost said both sides but I think there are more sides involved, different opinions, etc.) made me think everything over and I realized I was just parroting others' opinions of the CIs and from the lone example in my city -- the guy had a CI implant when they first came out and he ended up with one side of his face partially paralyzed. With my IT background I figured if computers are improved almost daily, then CIs should too and the medical field is always improving too (just picture, CI = computer and doc who implants CI = medical field) -- This picture changed my opinion on CIs.
Again, I want to welcome you to this forum and I wish the best for you, your daughter and especially your wife.
