So,

What do you think of ASL aka American Sign Language? Are you willing to learn ASL or no? why not or why?

I already know ASL. It is just like anything else in life, it has it's good and "bad". I think that is why I often tend to PSE more when I think it necessary.

I'm taking classes and will be starting Step 3 next week. My daughter and I have used it on occasion, but I don't expect to use it a lot as I still hear/understand speech pretty good with my HAs.

I am interested in learning it. At home, we use PSE, but I actually find--from my limited experience with it--that ASL feels less "clunky."

Jen M.

I would love to be able to use ASL, but I am not very good at it. I tend to rely on PSE.

Anyone, don't be afraid of replying what do you think of ASL? think ASL is useless to you? I know most of you are reading but i can't read your mind as to why you dont reply.

I dont blame any asl users who dont reply to this thread because we first learn ASL or any forms of sign language when we were kids or expert at it.

I am learning it now (have been for the past six months). Don't know if my hearing will continue to degrade - but no matter. I'm enjoying my ASL journey!

I wonder, can somebody tell me why do you think ASL "is" not a real language?

Among other things, I think it's a rich and vibrant language and deserves equality with other languages.

I've taken several classes, have been tutored by my friend who happens to be Deaf and participated in some Deaf events here but have not kept up consistently.

I wish we'd use it at home but hubby was raised very oral. Speaking and "fitting in" is very important to him. He didn't know anything of Deaf culture he became more aware after meeting me.
Speech doesn't always come easily to me and it's often easier for me to sign, or at least try to.

I've had the opportunity to sign if I meet a deaf person as I go about my daily errands or whatever and I've been grateful to at least try and the responses toward me have ranged from "no big deal, we're both doing our best here" to great relief that an attempt was made.

I know I need a lotta improvement in my ASL but I tend to think in pictures and so the way ideas are formulated and the visual aspect just makes sense to me.

I know. some people says about syntactic structure differently so think asl is no language.

Yeah. Well, they complained ASL was used to be "SEE", but... I don't think they realize ASL is actually evolving and still it is. Just like Ol' English evolved into Modern English. ASL was once a non-visual language changed into a new visual language. I don't really get "ASL failed deaf children", "ASL is not a real language" or something like that. So, whatever.

From what I understand that I was raised in using SEE at school and i ended up had trouble with english because I do not read the books. SEE made me so sleepy and read the books the same thing with what SEE is. Until i get older and met many people who uses ASL that I didn't realize that was ASL and i chatted with them very smooth. It led me to read the book with someone who uses ASL and it made me read the book more but in a little late for my age. BUT heck thats OK. So ASL is really useful for me. I hope ASL is useful for most of them too.

I grew up learning SEE at the deaf school, but started learning some ASL in 8th grade and again in 10th grade. I even took an ASL class at the college with a Deaf instructor. I still use more PSE than anything though (combining SEE with ASL). I use ASL signs but in more english language structure. I haven't quite grasped the ASL language structure.

That is exactly happened to me, too! I think PSE is fine, that I can understand almost everything but ASL is so clear to me. But, I wonder, do you think ASL can be evolved into ASLE in near future, maybe?

Oh yeah I dont mind if it become ASLE. :hmm: I do sign both PSE and ASL but most of time, PSE. lol

Me either. I think it is so great to see how improve ASL is. Compare to the past, y'know. :)

Ha ha, I sign PSE the most of time because of my family. But I try do my best to sign in ASL.

Yeah me too but i understand others who sign in ASL very clear with no troubles. I do sign in ASl when I see deaf people who are native ASL users. I should ask them to see what they think of my signs. :hmm: lol

I'm a hearie, and learning ASL which I think is an incredibly vibrant language. Ive applied to college for a 1 year program in Deaf studies, hoping to go on to the interpreter program if they accept me. At this point, I don't use my ASL every day and I'm far from fluent, but I find myself signing at my husband and the poor guy has no idea what I'm signing at him! :^O
My second son is hoping to take ASL in his highschool next year (it's offered in the language program as the school has a deaf program), for his own interest.

I am learning ASL and currently do some PSE at home. I have been ridiculed in public for signing and speaking in public at the store or the libraries, but I do it anyway. Every so often, I will stop talking and sign in PSE and the kids understand me, but no one else in the house.

I think it is a very beautiful language and am really looking forward to getting to be more and more proficient in it.
