Proud to be Disabled?

I consider myself disabled, there is nothing wrong with that.
It's a blessing, I don't hear my husband snore at night :)
The way I see it, I wouldn't be who I am today if I wasn't deaf. We see, "hear", feel, smell things from a different perspective.

Exodus 4:11 'The LORD said to him, " Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord?'

With this being said, I'm content being deaf.

I don't rely on any of that (except for Hearing Aids). All i rely on is myself and waht i know. I get by just fine without those services. I don't know, i guess it's all what people are used to. I still don't consider myself "disabled' and i hate that word. It seems too offensive. We may as well put people who wear glasses and contacts in that category too then. And who can forget about fat people? They may as well be disabled too....it just sucks that society feels the need to place people in categories. I'm sorry for going on and on, but i feel so stronly about it.

I'll shut up.

You rely on hearing aids to hear better, what are you talking about glasses? Have you heard of School for glasses children? well no, they are not disabled, there are heaps of school for the deaf and hard of hearing, no offence!! Have a nice day!

No offence, but what does that have to do with Breezy's post.
I think this individual was merely trying to point out Society's need to categorize people.

Society

It is unfortunate but we must place people in categories or we would have major problems in society. We would have criminals walking the streets cause we are not allowed to categorise them, you would not receive any assistance or goverment benefits because we cannot put people in categories. I know people say they don't want to be put in boxes but it is reality of society to make society with many different and individual people work. Think about it!!!

Also people who wear glasses are not blind, how ever blind people get great benefits. Some people wear hearing aids and are not considered deaf yet when you are classified deaf you get benefits. The arguement about glasses is stupid, and not pertinant to the discussion. Some people use simple aids like glasses to help and the seriously blind use dogs and white canes. A simple aid is to use a basic hearing aid and the serious deaf use dogs, tty phones flashing lights etc.

Stop trying to change the categories to include people that don't deserve to be there.

Also I am offend about her comment about fat people. She may as well as pick on all the other catergories she missed!!!!

Don't make assumptions, I have THOUGHT about it. I do agree with you. I personally think that it is necessary to place people in categories. There are positive and negative aspects of it. Some people are a little sensitive when it comes to certain "titles" of these groups, such as Handicapped, Deaf and Dumb or even Disabled.

Thank you! I'm not the only one who saw no connection with that post and my own. I don't understand what he said anyway.

I've been deaf ever since I was born and sometimes i hated being that way but I do believe that there is a reason for my deafness and sometimes I like being that way so that I wouldn't have to hear so much annoying noise or even listen to assholes talking shit to me and stuff like that lol you know hearing people don't feel virbrations as well as deafies do so I could feel some 10 feet away or less, so that's kinda cool I guess

ROFL!! That's funny. Yeah, you don't have hear a lot of unnecessary garbage! LOL! :)

I think the term "Special Needs" may be a little better than disabled, because disabled sounds like someone or something that's unable to function at all.

Have you heard of School for glasses children?[/QUOTE} Many years ago there were Sight Saving classes for kids with glasses. Actually many blind and low vision people wear glasses, sort of the way many Deaf people wear hearing aids and CIs.

Yeah, I´m deaf. It doesn´t affect me. I´m happy what I am.
I´m pride person & never let anyone think/say negatives over Disabled!!!
