This thread is only for students who have been enrolled at Gallaudet University and share an experience.

What is last time when you attended at Gally? Graduated? Withdrew?

Pros:

Cons:

For me...

I attended at Gally during 2011-2012 and had to withdrew because of medical condition and experienced the difficult when got away from my families.

Pros:
1) the professors that sign in full ASL
2) the education is well suited to me due designed for deaf people
3) the cafeteria is fairly good at overall
4) excellent academic advisors
5) nice iMac's in computer labs
6) the university internet is very fast - less than 30 minutes for 10 GB during late night to early morning
7) the career center is very helpful with my resume
8) Gally is located in Washington DC - nice place to visit and great public transportation

Cons:
1) some selection at cafeteria isn't suited for students with medical condition, including me but they offer a special diet
2) the dorm looks pale - all white wall with ugly, stained carpet because students spilled the beers and never clean at all (my roommate returned last fall and he said it has been renovated)
3) no kitchen access at dorm for everyone (that's exception for new built dorm), except for doctor note
4) Gally is located in bad neighborhood but improved than 10 years ago and not good if go beyond West Virginia Ave
5) some professors are bad
6) some GSR courses are unnecessary
7) some freshmen students have no respect - behave like high school kid
8) They treat us like high school kid in earthquake incident (in 2011)
9) fire alarm is very annoying - not happen so often at Carlin

Just share with us. :)

Quick point here. When you limit opinions to former students the results are going to be pretty skewed. Most alumni are pretty passionate about their school. I think that is unfortunate for people who might come here seeking a fair assessment.

But since you want to limit opinions, I will honor your request and not give mine.

I have to make additional.

Pros:
9) the math course is great with young professors, however there are few bad math professors - just caution to register the math courses but sometime, cannot be avoided if you are senior or have to meet prerequisites before go level up
10) Many deaf people to socialize
11) the disability office is fairly good

Cons:
10) do not like the environment of Gally library and they have issue with water leaking
11) some street lamps are out of service - make hard for me to see at night and not sure if it is fixed, however I filed the complained to desk service so no one fix it.
12) some AC are wacky - not work and I went few days without AC in heatwave
13) the health service isn't good as other 4 years universities but fair because of see a doctor or nurse at no charge

define bad.......drive by shootings? Gangs? Wish the area was gentrified....that would be awesome.

Ugh that sucks............wish they could improve things....

Pros of Gallaudet...

many of you who know me can guess what they are.

Cons..

the neighborhood....I graduated from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ and the neighborhood was very trendy and to see the neighborhood around Gallaudet after experiencing ASU was a huge huge let down. However, I learned to take advantage of the Metro to hop on it and go to the trendy areas of DC which was so much fun.

A group of us in grad school went to different International restaurants in DC once a week and we did that for two years. Oh, that was soooo awesome. I have FOND memories of it.

My time at Gallaudet was just one of the best times in my life. Even better than my time at ASU.

NOTHING NEW!

It has been an annoying issue for a long time. There had been at least three water damages in basement of the library during my time as Gally student.

They are building a new library to replace the library and then it will be demolished and converted into greenspace in a few years.

Yes, it became much worse after 2011 earthquake - more leaking and water damages than ever.

EMG will replace with new library - that what I got know from 2022 plan and you are correct about old library will become a greenspace.

Heard about Peet Hall will be demolished?

really? peet hall? wow I used to work at peet hall, and i kept feeling like someone watched me there. peet hall creeps me out. lol

Yup it will be replaced as planned. I have known that they intend to have it replaced before the earthquake hit there.

Those water damages happened following the heavy downpours.

I miss big MN11 classroom. Know why? On Saturday nights, my close buddy and I tended to sneak in there to watch movie on big screen with our good friend who had access to all rooms and entrances with keys while enjoying drinks and snacks. We never got caught! Whew!

Me too. I miss the building for two reasons...

I worked as RA there for one year.

It used to be home of my fraternity. :)

where is MN11???? where have i been?

It is located on lower floor of the library and it is where the Students Congress holds a weekly meeting during the academic year.

ohhh that explains why i kept avoiding library due to the awful odor and mold yikes
i wish i knew back in my time so i could have gone there. oh well

Yes, Peet Hall is one of most dirtiest dorm ever and bad for my allergies.

I wish I remember but I didn't. I worked there as a R.A. I didn't feel comfortable working there. it wasn't safe. I felt comfortable with krug hall, dorm five, benson hall and clerc. I didn't work with cogswell hall. ha

Peet Hall? more like Pew Hall!

I have been in the area for 15 years, part of the time working at Gallaudet. The area is much, much better than it was 15 years ago. Especially near the Metro station.
