Profoundly deaf - anyone like me, have CI?

What?? I demand to see the results. You can't tell that you are getting assessed for CI and then say nothing...

 True. I posted my results after my evaluation a few years back. But I suppose it's an individual preference. :)

I wouldn't have said it if it wasn't JClarke. He is not easily offended. Plus I am sure he knows how curious everyone will be. :)

Jake, take your time. You can list out why you are interested in getthing a CI. I did think about it a lot and i decide not to have it afterall. But my hub likes it a lot. Sure there is pros and cons about a CI. :)

Good luck with the appt..

I can certainly understand wanting to take your time and weigh out the options.

Of course I will be just about 6 months from initial consult with the CI Audi til activation time in 3 weeks. Yes I rushed through the process basically as quickly as the system would let me, however Im sure I did just as much research and thinking about the options as you have....jsut in a much shorter time span is all

Keep us posted

Gee, after reconisdering CI on and off, I finally got an appointment to have 2 hour assessment with the audi or whatever on the 26th June 2011.

This is the day I find out the truth I've been waiting for 12 years...

Ah! I hope you luck~ I also am a profoundly deaf CI user (in my right ear only, though). HAs never worked for me. I was implanted at 18 months though, so I don't think I'll be that much of use to you. :dunno: Sorry. :P

I think that you should go for it if you can, and even if you got a CI, you'll still be deaf (you can always take it off...). Anyway, I look forward to the result. :D

Thanks everyone
and yes, definitely, I will tell you the results. :cool2:

JClarke, your original post kind of reminds me of my own situation. Whereas I first had an evaluation about 10 years ago. And decided not to get a CI then. Then reconsidered and had another evaluation few years ago and got a CI in 2008. Best of luck with your upcoming assessment!
Yeah, that is very similar besides it is 12 years for me.
So I'll see how this assessment goes, since the technology has advanced a lot over the years.

Just curious why you decided you don't want CI? Did you consider it at all ?

CI is a major surgery. I dislike the foreign object in my head by performing a head surgery. If you get CI then you ll need to take lots of visiting to the audiologist and keep up with it. I only want to listen for my fun, but not serious. so I am ok with wearing HA.

If you're talking about mappings? Yes, those who just got a CI tend to go more often, like about every 3 months or so. And then as you wear them longer, you can branch it out to going to just about once every 6 months or so which I tend to do. Although I do know of some that goes just once a year. And also know of some that go more often. Sometime it come down to personal preference. Or you'd also go when there's simply a need to.

I am scheduled to go every two years, but I don't have to go. But if I have any issues I can go anytime, I usually have mappings once a year.

Ok. :)

Your just making it very over-done.
CI surgery is not that big at all, just a small drill in the skull, put in the wire and volia. Its nothing like heart-transplate.
(Fine, I understand the foreign objects in the body, thats your opinion, but I dont give a crap as long as it helps me hear)

I got 2 CI and only go visit audiogist every 6 months, not consist like you mae it seem. Sure the first year, your going to visit every 3-6 weeks to every 3 months but thats because you are training the cochlea to get used to the implant.

Before i lost my AB implant a few months ago, I never had it re-mapped for about 2 years. It was just constant tune up on the same old mapping (damn, makes me a bit upset the fact that I had to move on to cochlear n5 and do remap, and make it a strong map over many tune ups.)

I only want to listen for fun but not serious
Wut?

I dont even think wearing my CI is for fun or serious, i think of it as an access to hear, for fun (hanging out with buddies) and for serious (meetings, job interviews, ect).

But then it is your opinion weather you want a CI or not, but dont be making it worst than it sounds.

I am sorry if you guys feel this way. My hubby has a CI and I have witnessed him with everything what was going on. Yes, sure it is a MAJOR surgery to me. I would not dare to tell anyone like oh surgery is NOTHING. NO WAY. you all know what surgery is to CUT someone's body/head and open it.

He asked me why and I answered his question.

I actually understand Frisky's point. I did not get that she was putting down the CI. She was saying she is satisfied with what sounds she gets out of her HAs. I feel the same way. The only reason I looked into a CI myself a few years ago was because it seemed like a huge thing for speech, but I learned otherwise (for ME, not saying that's the case for everyone.) So I'm satisfied with what sounds I get out of my HAs as well as Frisky is.
