Proceeds from "The Hammer" benefit State School for the Deaf in Rome - YNN, Your News Now
he biopic on deaf UFC fighter Matt Hamill is now providing more than inspiration for students at the State School for the Deaf in Rome.
Hamill welcomed students to the film's premiere last month and Thursday, he presented the school's superintendent with $600 raised in conjunction with the film. While that donation was expected, the UFC also kicked in an extra $5,000 officials say will go a long way to enhancing school offerings.
"It'll probably give us opportunities to buy equipment, programs for the kids that they didn't have, trips, educational programming. The sky's the limit at this point. So, we just can't believe it actually happened," said Carriann Ray, superintendent for the New York State School for the Deaf in Rome.
Ray says Hamill serves as an example to students that being hearing impaired doesn't have to limit what they can achieve in life.
