PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — A former New York prison worker who helped two murderers escape from a maximum-security lockup has been sentenced to up to seven years behind bars.

Fifty-one-year-old Joyce Mitchell wiped away tears and apologized as she was sentenced Monday to 2 1/3 to seven years in prison under terms of a plea deal with prosecutors this summer.

She pleaded guilty to charges related to providing tools to Richard Matt and David Sweat, who broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility June 6.

The pair eluded more than 1,000 searchers in northern New York for weeks. Matt was killed by a border agent June 26. Sweat was wounded and captured by a trooper two days later.

Mitchell admitted becoming close with the pair, and she agreed to be their getaway driver before backing out.

Is it now "bieng close",is that a polite euphamism for having sex
Well...
She could of gotten far worse...really...all things considered....
I think.seven is to harzh though....considering no one was hurt besides a murderer being killed and another shot..
Anywyay..
Shell be out before shes 60..

7 too harsh?...:hmm:...IMO, no it isn't...is she being required to pay back all that $$ that was spent on the manhunt for these guys?...Don't think so...Wasn't she accused of wanting to murder her own husband?...not sure if that was substinuated tho'...
51 years old isn't a spring chicken...she knew better, regardless....Why do we have prison guards for anyway?...She enabled 2 ruthless murders to escape.

Where she is getting at least 23 Mil dollars? I don't think she would be able to get that much with prison labor rate of maybe 75 cents an hour. Joke, eh?

'Course not...the taxpayers have gotta pay for it...all because she fell in love and had sex with a convicted murderer....:giggle:....this world gets more weirder and weirder....Wondering too...if she is gonna be in a minimum or maximum prison?...Better watch her closely....Next thing we know...she's escaped with another woman prisoner whose in there for murder....

Right and the tax payers are gonna pay over 400 a day to keep her a non violent person locked up for seven years....

She is non violent person.
Max would be unjust.
This is first crimknal offence...
Then again ive known rapist handed 2 and less....
Meh
If it makes sense to you....cool

Not many brains, they no give toss about her she should seen what ruthless men they were.
A prison named after a president not sure I take that as compliment

How can you be so sure she is a non-violent person?....Prison Guards at a maximum facility...don't they go thru all phases of rigidous training...And she's a woman, in a maximum facility...I wouldn't cross her if I met her in person.

This was sensational news...so here we are, paying for her mistakes....feel sure the rapist you know that got 2 years or less...didn't cost the taxpayers millions of $$ to catch him either....and he hadn't killed anyone before either...

If I were the Judge...10 years...and a percentage of her earnings towards the amount the taxpayers had to pay....

7 years is not long enough , she put her whole town at risk helping 2 cold blooded killers escape , wasted taxpayers $$$ trying to find the guys .
All this b/c they made her " feel special" . The schools had to stay close for 2 days ,I think. The city should seize her house to get back some the money used on the man hunt .

Easy, she proved herself she isn't violent... if she is that violent, she won't back off. She backed off because Richard had intention to be violent after escape, and she couldn't accept that part and run into emergency room. Called her violent? My ass!

No, I am not pity her but should she be punished more than what she deserve? I don't think so. It does not help at all.

Think about it, 10 years okay, and she is 51 years old where 10 years would get more effective as life sentence. Sure people can live to 100 years old, but when one sent to prison, their life expectancy decreases faster than you could image. If she's like 30 years old then 10 may be more fairer. 30 years old can handle prison better than 50's

Guess what? She already lost her own state pension benefits and other benefit she and her hubby could have enjoy after retirement. Its sucks that its gone so life in retirement for her won't be easy after all. Pointless on giving her longer sentence.

She was not a screw (guard). She was a sewing teacher. Not a screw. Sewing techers do not get screw training...and are not screws.

All evedence we have from her life shows she is not a violent person. She was never a criminal. But give a non.violent person seven years...she willl lesrn to.be violent. Its certain.

Stop and think! Seize her house would penalize the rest of her family who were not in on the escape plan.

Yup, thank God they (State) took away her pension. She and her husband effectively lost everything they have gain over years. Sad!

Does anyone remember...she wanted to kill her husband....:hmm:....he refused to believe it and is still with her (as far as I know)....

I have not taken the time to look it up; but the way I remember it one of the guys wanted to do that and it was a good part of her backing out on picking them up.

No, it was Richard Matt that wanted her husband killed in order to keep it as low profile as possible so he can cross country border.

The reason is obviously because husband would call cop right away if she is not back home and theres prison break so Richard's idea of killing him just to buy him time for his ill-fate escape plan.

You of all people are taking the word of a cop killer and a murderer..
Fasciniting...

Cuz
Thats the only evedence we have to the above...the state didnt believe it, if it did she would of gottent conspiricy to commit murderon her.
According to the cons...indeed thats what they say..
She claimed.otherwise,
