PostPartnum Depression - Brooke Shields

Updated

Way to go, Brooke!

Brooke Shields is lashing out at Tom Cruise, who recently criticized the actress for using antidepressants and called her actions " irresponsible."

Shields, whose recent book Down Came the Rain chronicles her battle with postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter Rowan in 2003, says Cruise should mind his own business.

" Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens and let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them," says the former Suddenly Susan star.

Last week Cruise, who stars in the upcoming War of the Worlds, told Access Hollywood that is was " irresponsible" for Shields to assert that antidepressants helped cure her. " When someone says (medication) has helped them, it is to cope, it didn't cure anything. There is no science. There is nothing that can cure them whatsoever," he said.

Cruise, 41, who is an ardent advocate of Scientology, which condemns mind-altering prescriptions of any kind, instead suggests that women care for themselves with " vitamins and exercise." He then added about Shields: " I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is an incredibly talented women, (but) look at where has her career gone."

Meanwhile, Cruise's new girlfriend, Katie Holmes, has nothing but praise for her beau. " He's the most amazing man in the whole world," she said at the May 31 Tokyo premiere of Batman Begins. As for Cruise's religious beliefs: According to a source close to Holmes, who is Catholic, she hasn't converted to Scientology but is interested in understanding it.

:ily: Brooke Sheild and I'm glad she's standing up for herself!

Katie sounds so naive. :Ohno:

I agree! I applaud Brook for defending her right to decide the best treatment option for herself. I also agree that Katie Holmes sounds really naive and stupid, but she's young. I don't think that union will last very long.

I agree but honestly, I think everyone is/was naive in any relationship and marriage at certain points. Or maybe Katie knows something about Tom Cruise that we don't? I want to play as Devil's Advocate in this topic so don't mind me :)

However I agree with what Brooke said: "let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them," says the former Suddenly Susan star."

That's what women's rights for.

The words "Boy Toy", and "Girl Toy" come to mind. I believe that's all this relationship is. Tom has to be a good 10-15 yrs older than Katie, and it makes me wonder what he sees in her, and whether or not, he just wants someone to agree with him and his belief system. Forgive me for being blunt, but I think Tom Cruise is nothing more than an egotistical ass. I also wonder what the heck he is teaching his children. I find the fact that he's a father very frightening. I really do.

It happens to a lot of women, and for TC to suggest that we should take vitamins and exercise the problem away, is just plain lunacy. I believe Tom has a right to his belief system, but he doesn't have the right to impose his beliefs on people when it's not welcomed; especially when he doesn't have a medical degree! Tom should have minded his own damn business!

Touché.

But I would like to think that girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband should be able to give their lovers and their beliefs a chance to see how it is? I mean, to learn or to understand each other is part of relationship after all. Or I somehow misunderstand what you were trying to say? If so, my apology :x

Since we both already made it clear about our beliefs in medicine and whatsnot so I hope it is ok for me to join in that discussion. I am not trying to defend Tom at all but I do believe in what he believes in. Not Scientology but vitamins, exercises and eating healthy foods. Few days ago, I decided to google and found different treatments to resolve for this Postpartum Depression condition. Some doctors made the same recommendation as Tom did about this condition (example). I guess that's where he got the information from.

Again, I am not going to defend Tom or trying to engage you into debate... I just want to offer a different perception or belief in this case however I firmly believe that it is entirely up to women to choose which the best treatment for them to help them. Not men or doctors. Of course, doctors can offer the different treatments but the final decision goes to women to make, not doctors or us (men). If it works for Brooke then great. As I repeatedly myself as a broken record, I am all for women's rights.

Oceanbreeze or any women, I hope I didn't offend you with my belief but that's my belief. And I disagree with what Tom did (telling women what to do).

I respect you, Mag. You know that, and I'm not offended. Again, I got caught up in it being Tom Cruise. Eh, I'll confess, I just don't like him.

Anyway, personal biases aside. You and I can agree to disagree on this. Actually, I'm not sure I disagree entirely. I think what I'm saying is, I take issue with Tom forcing his opinions on Brooke. That burns me.

But, also, I believe in modern medicine. That's true. I was brought up in an environment where, quite honestly, the hospital was like "my home away from home". Therefore, I'm a bit biased towards modern medicine. However, I can and do see your point. I believe vitamins and exercise play a role and can help. I just don't think it's a cure. But, again, we can agree to disagree. ;) But, everyone has the right to decide for themselves what is best for them.

You're a good person, Magatsu. I really do respect you. :)

I echo this statement too! While I do believe that vitamins, exercise and good sleep do HELP but it does not help every single woman struggling with post partnum depression. I have been in that shoes before and do not want to see any woman deprived of her right to choose what works for her. I just dont want to see anyone telling Brooke what is right or wrong.

P.S. I feel for Katie...while I think Katie is a wonderful lady in her own right, I think she is dazed by Tom's power and stardom. Who in her right mind doesnt want to be on Tom's arms and help propel her own stardom like Nicole and Penelope? Both became famous after being with Tom, not to say that they needed Tom to actually be good actresses but they needed chances and they got these unlike many other good actresses but without any connection to make it this far.

Yeah, I suppose. But, they also must take the good with the bad. They are the ones who are getting millions of bucks to what they do. If they want less of a public life, they can take their money and stop making films.

Yes I can understand Tom Cruise’s view but he has no right to judge Brooke. It’s good that Brooke show him up with her different view. Yes, I'm agree with her that he should mind his own business when the medicines works on her good. He has no right to run her life because it's her life, she is happy and satasify with.

I was victim of Postpartum Depression for a first time after 2nd birth. I know what it’s alike. Real terrible! The doctors get therapy to come to visit me in the hospital twice and give me a lot of tips how to cope with it before I left for home with baby.

I copied with postpartum depression well within few weeks with the help from my hubby. I can image it would be worst without get the wonderful support from him.

My hubby took 2 weeks off to support me after come home from 7 days hospital. He helped me with housework, cook, etc and left me enjoy my newborn baby. I went for a walk or use bicycle which it helps a lot, and also swimming, too. I went for a walk with baby pram on the way to pick my eldest son from kindergarten up.

I sleep when 2nd son slept. I drink fluid alot due breastfed and eat vitamins.

We visited to deaf mother and child group every Tuesday that it’s good and family club every Saturday. We shared the tips etc. that it really cheer me up.

Its work well on me but I know everyone has different to believe on medicine or not. I also know it’s depend on women who have kind of postpartum depression either they can copied it or not.

To be on topic, I didn't know he's bisexual. I knew he was married to Nicole Kidman once.

No, Tom had been married twice to 2 different actresses.

Offering suggestions...

Hello! It is my first time here. I'm 59 y.o. from Idaho. To those of you who are experiencing overweight and/or depression, if you are still struggling, may I present some suggestions? You can try the following suggestions without jeopardizing your health. Firstly, I am a strong believer in vitamins, minerals and herbs (in moderation), but I am careful and selective of them and I listen closely to what or how my body is reacting. Not everything that works for me works for others. Let me begin: If you are having problems being overweight, and in case you are eating foods high in sugars and carbohydrates, any excess or amounts your body does not need becomes fat. That is one rule to remember. The other is if you love dairy foods and meats generally from beef cattle, be aware that those foods contain vitamin K. Long history short - farmers feed alfalfa (hay) to fatten or "beef up" the cattle for good sales. (Alfalfa is VERY rich in vitamin K!) The meat finally reaches the market and you know the rest. So eat sparingly. Some ppl are more sensitive to Vit. K than others. Bleeders need that vitamin a lot, but the rest of us need to use good judgement or we'd end beefened up like cattle as well. Vitamin K thickens the blood and also helps the body to forms blood clots. Again, we still need some and in moderation. If need, you can get blood thinners from your Dr or from health store, but you must be careful. The only way to know a person took too much thinner is when he/she gets dizzy from getting up from bed in the a.m. If that happens, then you stop taking the thinner for a while. This is good to know. Next thing, it is the way we eat. America's lifestyle is to eat salads first, main dish (includes meat) next and finish with dessert such as ice cream, etc. This way of eating usually leads to acid indigestion for many ppl. Many ppl in Europe do not eat that way. They eat foods with proteins first and salads last! So try eating protein foods first, such as milk (if you love milk), steak or whatever, then on to potatoes & gravy or any non-acid and non-protein that you like to eat, then finish your meal with high acids such as salads. Cucumber should be eaten last because it is strongest in acid. (eat dessert about one and one-half hour later) After this, you should notice less bloating or less stomach indigestion. When this happens, that means 2 things: you should start feeling energy and vitality and secondly, it should hold down your weight. Eat in moderation and not in excess. Ask at the health store their suggestions also. Usually the ppl that work there are very helpful. Because of them, I have accidently found the cure for Parkinson's Disease! Now, please don't get excited or get angry either way if it worked or did not, but one more thing and it is for treating depression. I had my depression cured twice very rapidly by taking high stress B-Complex vitamins from the health store! I have not had severe depression and don't want it, but I believe that either men or women can safely take pre-natal vitamins for severe depression. Pre-natal vitamins are the same as normal vitamins except they are strengthened vitamins. A doctor in Canada has had remarkable success using B-Complex vitamins with his patients. You won't believe the type of patients he has had. They were ppl with all different kinds of mental problems including depression, but I don't think he used pre-natal vitamins. But if depression is not severe, then use the high stress B-Complex tablets. There is soooo much more to say, but I believe I have completed the coverage you need. I let this be sufficient for now, but get the products only from health food stores! No where else, because anywhere else is synthetic or man-made from a chemical lab! Exercise is also important, but make it right for you. Take care!

I can't beleive no questions his motives for attacking Brooke Shields all of the sudden.

The gossip is that he's still pissed that his part ended up on the cutting room floor in the movie "Endless Love". Tommy Boy still had a grugde all these years against her.
