I only have a short amount of time right now but I wanted to try and post some of my horrible nightmare to see if anyone here has any suggestions or anything...

Ft. Collins Police Department in Colorado (where I do NOT live anymore) believes that I am the only person who could ever call them over relay. There is a history here of the police department doing things like screaming at me to "listen better" and blah blah... and they are angry about the civil rights complaint I filed gaianst them and they ahve alreayd been found negligent in 9 different ways in just how they investigated my complaint...

But my current nightmare is that they say my disbaility is why they will not be charging the person who broke into my home and assulted me (and confessed) and caused enough damage I may need surgery on my hand and have thousands in medical bills... then they did charge them, lied about the court date and only charge dthem with harrassment and since they lied about the court date I can not even ask for a restraining order to get the continued death threats to stop...

I now have to get help to type most things and the person who beat me up destroyed my Captioned Telephone...

I called them during robbery and they told me to call back the next day and then hung up on me.

Yet somehow this police department is claiming that I am calling them over relay, claiming that I am other people. If anyone calls them over relay they immediatly say you are really Emily xxxx and we don't take relay calls unless this is an emergency, and even then they say call back the next day and speak to Leuitent John Pino who apparently thinks I am the only one who could ever contact them over relay.

I ahve not been doing so but they say I am. I would not conatct them if my life depended on it. I asked them to stop this...

I don't know how to prove to them OTHER people use relay!!! I tell them this and they say "no, Emily xxxx is the only one who uses it"

Any suggestions? Please help

(my real name is Emily xxxx - of course not going to tell my last name :)

You mean the police department told you not to call thru the relay service unless it is a life threaten emergency?...If so, then the police department is doing the wrong thing, they should take your calls no matter if you're calling thru a relay service or not....

And why does the police claim that you're the one who's been calling everyday, how do they really know that one person is calling thru a relay service when there are many of us that still use the relay to make calls...

I don't understand the other part of what you said in your post, if you can please explain alittle more on what you meant by court, break-in, etc... :dunno:

Btw, did you file your complaint to the ADA?...

Emily,
Not sure if you know me, but I'm a police officer in MD. Send me a PM and I'll see what I can do to help you out. There are some details missing from your post and I'd need a little more information to help. Just let me know.

There is something missing from this story. I've asked Emily (in the same thread in another part of AD) to send me some information.

Huh? which thread?...

Hey thanks for the responses...

I guess you are right. My post is a bit confusing and jumbled... I think I am just so upset... I will try to write up something that explains it better (and clearer) what's going on.

To quickly clarify:
They tell ANYONE who calls them over relay to the non emergency number they will not take the call unless it is an emergency. (I know this because of what others have told me about their calls to them)

I have not been calling them for the past month and yet every time someone does call them over relay, especially if they state they are not me, this police department threatens me for their calls and refuses to help the people that do call them. They believe that I am the only one that could ever call them over relay....

The whole court thing will take a bit longer to clarify (my hand was injured in the attack and I type slow now - part of why I don't even use relay right now) and I have to run - I will type up something and post it ASAP that explains that better - sorry about the confusion I just am so upset that they keep doing this... I don't even live there anymore and I can not keep the whole world from ever contacting them over relay.

(p.s. I did file internal affairs complaint and teh citizen review board found them respoible for being negligent in 9 ways - but that was 6 months agao about a slightly differnet matter- I did file ADA complaint with Dept of Justice and notice of intent letter and all that just amkes them do this more and worse... at least untlii teh Dpet of justice starts holding them accounatble for this crud... I don't want to have to sue them to make this stop... I have so many better things to do and people who use relay - video or ip or any kind - do have a right to not be treated this way)

thanks for your responses... sorry I wasn't more clear - I think I am just a bit upset about this nightmare...

Police Departments are to take all calls even non-emergency and emergency. I don't see why they refused to take relay calls for non-emergency, if hearing people can call non-emergency line, so can we. I haven't experience this problem before in my entire life, If I were you, I'll file a complaint against the police department.

Emily had three threads going with the same information and I had replied to a different one...looks like a mod combined them now.

Tylor - tried to PM you this but it didn't work (said something about space) but do feel free to PM me back. This is an intense problem I am running into and any insight or advice or any thoughts you might have would be much appreciated. I don't think police department gets how to treat people with auditory problems... I do very much respect what they do, and what police officers do in general. It is a tough job that I don't think I could do and I am so grateful for. You all run into the danger and protect the rest of us as we run away - Thank you for that. The officers in the town where I live now have actually been great about dealing with my auditory problem. That just is not the case with this police department of the town I used to live in and I just want this problem resolved. Any advice or insight you might be able to give as a law enforcement officer would be great. I'm not sure what info is most helpful to know. The most urgent aspect of their misunderstanding of my auditory problem is that they do believe, as they have apparently stated, that I am the only one who uses relay and so they attribute all internet relay calls to me, apparently even when I do not live there and the relay caller adamantly asserts that they are not me. Since the calls can not be traced (I wish they could) they can't actually tell from their call trace system where the call is comming from (at least I don't think they can - I wish they could). They did apparently tell someone else who called them the other day that they could not unless they sent an officer to the location where the caller was but just as they were giving them their address the police transffered them to a voicemail that the relay operator could not even relay because it was too fast... Either way, I am kind of stuck right now because I do not know how to get it across to them that OTHER people use relay, not just me. Even I rarely use it because of injury to my hands... The most important thing I wish they would understand and that I could somehow show them is that I am NOT calling them and especially that I am NOT calling alleging I am other people! I am not only not doing that but I have no ability to do that, no reason to do that, nothing to gain from doing that... and yet every time they get a relay call from SOMEONE ELSE, they contact me angry because they assuming that the call was from me, when it was not. I dunno what to do. Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this? How can I get this across to them? How can I show them it is not me? Why are they assuming it is me? Why don't they understand other people use relay? Are there any ways for these officers to trace these relay calls to the real people who are calling so they stop getting so angry at me, espeically when I am living 70 miles away and not calling them? How am I supposed to make no one call them over relay so they stop getting angry at me and threatening me? I can nonly change what I do - not everyone else's!!! I'm not just concerned about them being mad at me, but for those who are calling them and are apparently treated like they are me... I can't imgaine that is helping anyone (not the police, not the caller(s), not me....) I dunno even how to approach all of this or what I can do....

Anyhow, sorry about rambling on but any advice or insight you might have would be wonderful. Thanks.
