Police: Baby Dead After Being Put In Dryer - New Orleans News Story - WDSU New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS -- Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies arrested a baby sitter on Thursday in connection with the death of a 5-month-old boy.

Ariel Smith, 19, had been babysitting Andre Jenkins and his 18-month-old brother, said Col. John Fortunato. The children's mother had left the two boys in Smith's care at her Harvey home and proceeded to work.

Fortunato said Smith told them she put the baby in a clothes dryer because she was frustrated with the child.

The mother, Brandy Dozier, received a phone call from Smith later in the day alerting Dozier that the boy had stopped breathing, Fortunato said.

Emergency responders reported the boy was dead when they arrived at the home.

Smith repeatedly claimed the infant had been burned in an accident involving a pot of boiling water, but later confessed to placing the child in the dryer, Fortunato said.

WDSU-TV tried to contact Smith at her home Thursday night, but nobody answered the door.

Smith was arrested Thursday night and charged with one count of first-degree murder. She was slated to make an initial court appearance Friday.

that stupid! but babysitters never put baby in dry machine its would kill!
 
Absolutely horrible!

And yet, we have a political candidate that proposes an abstinence only program that will lead to an increase in teen pregnancy. We can also expect to see an increase of events like this when kids who are not ready to be parents make a baby, and are forced to care for it.

I am not arguing for abstinence only. But more state are getting a policy of allowing unwanted babies to be left at hospitals with no repercussions.

Hopefully that can be more publicised so people will know that option.

Yes, they are. And the indications are that the ones most in need of those services are not using them. What of the teen ager who decides to keep her child, but is woefully unprepared to deal with raising that child? Just as this baby sitter did not have the emotional maturity to deal with an annoying child, but thought she did, a teenaged mother in the same position is just as much at risk for abusing a child.
 
That's awful. Smith is very sick mind. She is going to stay in jail for long time until she dies.
 
That's sad! Wish that the mother would leave her 2 boys in the care of her relatives or family or best friends that she knew for years instead. :(
 
This is outragious!


Poor baby. The baby was only four months old. All she had to do was just put the baby in the crib and call the mother. But why in the hell she choose to put the baby in the dryer is beyond my comprehension.
 
That's horrible and yet, sad.

It makes you wonder who you really can trust your child/children with now these days for one to babysit.
 
Damn it! It made me piss off! I will not trust any babysit for my future babies.

i agree! i told my mom about i would watch my future children than babysitter who not treat to watch for ingore care like put machine example wash&dry machine,etc. but my mom would care my own children.

i can fired babysitter for actions who not ingore of my own children and no longer to babysitter as my rules.

but i can let my own mother or my grandmother watch my kids than babysitter but i would trust family babysitters.

I personally not allow to have a babysit with strange friends. I can let my baby stay at my parent or my parent in the law and family member only! I refuse send them to daycare either.

When I have an infant baby. It will be my our responsible to take care of our baby. I won't let my infant baby stay at sleepover at someone. I have to deal with baby's crying.
