Pole wakes from 19-year coma in democratic country

WARSAW (Reuters) - A 65-year-old railwayman who fell into a coma following an accident in communist Poland regained consciousness 19 years later to find democracy and a market economy, Polish media reported on Saturday.

Wheelchair-bound Jan Grzebski, whom doctors had given only two or three years to live following his 1988 accident, credited his caring wife Gertruda with his revival.

"It was Gertruda that saved me, and I'll never forget it," Grzebski told news channel TVN24.

"For 19 years Mrs Grzebska did the job of an experienced intensive care team, changing her comatose husband's position every hour to prevent bed-sore infections," Super Express reported Dr Boguslaw Poniatowski as saying.

"When I went into a coma there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed and huge petrol queues were everywhere," Grzebski told TVN24, describing his recollections of the communist system's economic collapse.

"Now I see people on the streets with cell phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin."

Grzebski awoke to find his four children had all married and produced 11 grandchildren during his years in hospital.

He said he vaguely recalled the family gatherings he was taken to while in a coma and his wife and children trying to communicate with him.

:eek3: He was shocked to see all the technology far out when he woke up from the coma for 19 years !! He would feel too overwhelming to see 11 grandchildren.

Imagine- :ugh3:

George Washington, Abe Linclon and Ben Franklin raise from the graveyard. What would their react to this society when they walked into the cities to see other people using the pager, cell phone, swearing, clothes style, etc...

Will they disappoint in us ?

It changed from communist to democratic in 19 years?

Rip Van Winkle, man! I bet he would say, what year is it? The nurse would say, 2007. He would be  It's 2007 already?!

Nah, not be disappointed in us but probably wouldnt like all the technology. I read somewhere that people who grew up in the 1800s, in their old age, couldnt stand all the modern technology of the late 1800s and early 1900 like electricity, phone, cars, and so forth. The most common comment they said was that everything was moving too fast for them...imagine what they would say about today's times!

Oh, wow... that's miracle to see him come back ! God bless on his wife's heart for bein' faithful to take care of him for 19 years. She has a great patience.

I am sure he will learn to pick up new things. His wife will help him through it by learnin' how things have changed in society, economy and all. I am positive sure that it overwhelms him about advanced technology, because it feels like he was ridin' in a time machine waaay ahead while he was sleepin' for 19 years. It is like a twilight zone to him. lol

Welcome back, Jan Grzebski !! :)
