Pocket Knives & Teenagers......

I think we all should post a pix of what pocketknife you're talking about because it can be confusing and the size of pocketknife varies largely.

I'm currently carrying a rather big pocketknife that has 2.5" blade, screwdriver, philips and scissor - Buck Knives.

First he's 17, and doesnt have a pocket knife?

And you guys fish all times?

I think someones overprotective here.

Let the kid get in trouble for bringing the knife to school if it happens. He gets suspended, big deal. He'll learn. Its not like you will lose your house, job over it.

Except when he goes out stabbing his teacher about 174 times with a 2 inch blade. But hey, they'll do that if they wanted to regardless if YOU gave him the knife or not.
 
Addressed that above. For kids, something similar to the official cub scout knife. Keeps 'em busy just sharpening it. lol

Oh, yea, for kids, start them whittling on ivory soap. It's easier while they are developing hand/eye coordination. Once they've got the hang of it, progress to a block of wood.
 
My son got his first pocket knife after completing a level through Royal Rangers at church when he was 11. He once stole one from my mother's purse when he was about 8 and almost got expelled from school. The policy was anything shorter than a 2 inch blade was fine, but 2 inches or more constituted immediate expulsion and the Sheriff's department being called. The knife he took was 1 3/4 inches. It was confiscated (he admitted to stealing in from Grandma) and I was called. Needless to say, he got a MAJOR grounding. After he got his knife at age 11, we had a locked drawer it stayed in unless he was using it under supervision. Now, since we got here to MIL's house and my FIL had a crap load of pocketknives, Son has about 12 of them now. He keeps them locked up in a case under his bed. HE also has a machete that is locked up. His sword doesn't fit anywhere to lock up, but he knows not to take it outside without supervision. He does have BB guns, but his use those plastic BB's. HE always lets either my mother or me know when he is taking out a knife and tells us exactly what he's planning on doing. He knows that if he does not let us know first, the whole case of them gets locked up where he can't get them for 6 months. It's already happened once. I didn't have a place to lock them up then, but daughter talked with a neighbor who is a sheriff's officer and he locked it up in his gun cabinet.

Now, I have a large flood/fire proof safe that his box will fit in.
 
I thought that all girls in Texas learned to shoot. My dad gave me a hunting knife just in case I need to fillet a carcass. It's funny because I never hunt.
 
What reason did your son give that sound good? I know if kids bring a knife to school in my state they're not allowed to go school and something have to go to court and end up with record! I think you should find out if your son plan on bringing the knife to school with him and who his friends are.

if he was planning to bring a knife to school he would have already done so
 
Matt (now 17) has never been interested in knives or guns...he does like to fish/shrimp/crab, we all do....

He took an interest in a knife that his friend carried in his pocket. His friend got mugged a few weeks ago by 5 dudes who robbed him, so his Dad OK'ed his son carrying a knife....my son also got mugged several months ago coming home from the grocery store.

If he carried the knife to school, he would not be suspended, he would be expelled.....(Florida law).

Matt seems to think that if he got mugged again, all he has to do is take out the knife and scare them away.....that doesn't always work.

As for caving, whittling anything, he has no interest in that. He's moreso a sports jock and of course, girls at this time.

Am I being overly protective? Yes, I am!....With his sports training and his Karate, I know he can stand his ground if there is one-on-one....but several dudes, no.....and flashing a knife to attempt to "scare" 5 dudes away, doesn't always work. Other people carry knives also, even guns, when they are robbing someone.

So, if I elect for him to have a knife, then it's my responsibility to make sure it's left at home when school starts. NO WAY would I want any of my sons to be expelled from school, their education is more important than a knife!

"WHY" would you even think that my son was "planning to take a knife to school?"....it's summer, school is out!...And he knows the ramifications of having a knife in his pocket if he brought one to school.....

He's never had a problem with fights at school...he keeps "his nose clean" stays out of trouble....the only way he would fight was in self-defense, and he's well equipped to do so. He's not gonna risk being throwed off the football/tennis team for something as stupid as a knife!

Sometimes I wonder about your "state of mind"!

a huge point that many people easily overlooked.... it's the fact that they're still alive today to tell their mugging stories. Can't say same if they were armed.

I used to be one of the few that carried a pocketknife when I was a teenager. It was inspirational because it gives a sense of coolness about it, just like owning Zippo lighters but the owners of them don't smoke, but you can offer someone a light in however you could show off some tricks.

For the knife, I have a USMC type, picked up how to flick it open, throw it, pop it out, etc. It was more of a hobby than anything, and gave me something to do than just sit around doing nothing all day. It's similar to practicing how to twirl a pencil, a skill of sorts if you want to consider it that.

I'd never bring it to high school though, it was grounds for expulsion and fortunately I was smart enough to realize that.

PS. I haven't turned into Mike Myers yet. :P Maybe in 10 years?

exactly..i didnt know my brilliant progeny had plans of shooting each other in the head with their bb guns either.

kids are always doing stuff that make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

yeah! i was like..what the hell?? i mean..how could that even be remotely be considered a good way to pass the time???
a close second was when my oldest mad a pulley/whatever in our back yard with an axe tied to it..to chop wood. i really wonder about them sometimes!!
 
I got a pocket knife for my 11th or 10th birthday. A couple hours later, I cut my ankle open. Yikes!

Good God!!! I about choked on my tea reading that one. I actually visualized someone walking and the pully and axe dangling and just running down the line to wack the person on the head!!!

Kids come up with some weird stuff!!
