I don't think my impending deafness is a gift. It's just how I am. But things are harder for me now that I am HoH. I am isolated, struggle to get my thoughts across to people, I miss music, I miss my fiances laugh, I tried to buy groceries today and the grocer was talking about only god know what while I just smiled and nodded. If deafness is a gift, is blindness? I'm just kinda confused by that statement.
Yes, deaf people are just normal people who may (or may not) talk with their hands. But in my limited experience, it's a bit like being in France and only speaking Icelandic. You can talk with others who speak your language, but everyone else is outside of the circle and can be a lot harder to communicate with. I don't know, I suppose we all have a different perspective but, because I went from hearing to not-so-much-hearing, I don't feel like I have been given a gift.
