im trying to rent out a room in my apartment and got a reply through craigslist that i am pretty sure is a scam.

she claims to be deaf and works for the DEAF LOTTO ASSOCIATION, i looked up this and found out it is a scam. i will post all the emails from her, they are even worded really weirdly...

Hello,
How are youn today?.My name is Jodie.I am a deaf,i work with the deaf lotto association.I am coming to Canada and will be staying for some months cos we intend to open a new facility,Lotto and job opportunity to the less previledge. And i also intend to start up a new life when i get there.A friend told me to check this web site that i can get an accomodation online, cos i need to secure a place before coming over.while checking through i saw your posting,so i decided to ask if it is still available. If available kindly get back to me.Below are things i will like to know about the place if available. The availability period, If the place close to railway Line and The price of the place, please try to give me the details of the asked question.I hope to read from you soon.
Regards
Jodie

the place is still available and the availability period would be as long as wanted. i don't know where or what railway line is, sorry. the bedroom would be 350 a month. There are already two people (me and my roommate) living here, I would move into the living room and that would become my bedroom, the dining room would be turned into the living room so everyone still has a living room. It would only be like this until someone moves out (my roommate thinks he is moving out in march or june), then there would only be two people so no one would be living in the living room. once someone moves out rent would have to be increased to cover what they paid, the total rent here is 835 plus utilities.

we are close to the railway tracks.... the adress is 33850 fern st. if you go to maps.google.com and type that in you would be able to see exactly where i live. when are you planning on coming down to abbotsford and how long do you plan to stay. hope to hear bacnk from you soon.

Hello,
Thanks for your prompt response.I so much appreciate your concern over my coming and will like you to know that am satisfied with the place terms and condition and also the price of the Place.I will like to make it clear for you that i will be coming over very soon and i will like to rent it only.So i will like to have everything set before coming over.If the place is available get back to me with the price and i want you to sum it up into monthly price,so that i can know how to schedule the payment, and i will only want you to send the ticket money to my agent ,so feel free to mail me if there is anything we need to clear out.
And also the payment will be coming from my client which will be in check and it will be excess, the payment contain my flight money and the money to secure the room you want to lease out.The excess payment will be sent to my travelling agent..If you are satisfied with my explanation and the place is still vacant you can get back to me with your full details so that i can send they payment. The details should contain your name, address, city, state, phone # and zip or postal code.
Regards
Jodie

the rent is 350 a month. can you give me some information about yourself and plans, like how long are you going to be planning on living here. also where are you from.
your sounding alot like a scam to me...

its pretty pathetic if it is. sending me money for the purpose of sending money back to you?

also looked up the deaf lotto association and the only references i could find to it on google were that it is a fake company used by scammers to steal money from less privileged people...

if this is true don't bother emailing me back

if she is a scam thats pretty low, trying to get money from someone who is only renting out a apartment, i thought it would be cool to live with a deaf person i was taught american sign language througout middle and high school...

Plain and simple: Deaf Lotto Association = SCAM! Run away from them as fast as you can. :run:

well i dunno but the first email was all sorts of grammaticaly incorrect.. and the second was a lot better..probably written by two different ppl so yes agreed Scam!

I have heard Lotto Sweepstakes pretty much, so yes it is a scam even through phone...it sounds pretty much the same, Deaf Lotto Association and Lotto sweepstakes...Lotto this and Lotto that...

Yep... it's one of the OLDEST online/email scams in the book. I get these all the time in my emails. It never ends.

i wonder why this was fereter's first post...hmmm ..but ya definitely a SCAM!

I stopped at "youn" with the thread's original/first post. Who deaf says that? (youn = doing)

Maybe it's a scam.

Beside, if you see them asking for your personal information through email, don't do that. There are informations they can use to get in your bank accounts, and other accounts.

Beside 350 a month is too good to be real.

wow, kinda surprised at some of these replies.

thank you to everyone == i thought it was a scam and now i am sure

about the 350 rent thing...

i live in abbotsford bc, the rent for my 2 bedroom apartment is 835 a month plus around 100 on utilities. there are three people living here, one in each bedroom paying 350 each and one living in the living room for 300, were college students wanting cheap rent...

British Columbia? Probably in better economic state than we are. Anyways, that's 3 people, I thought it was just for ONE.

Yep. Scam. I've gotten emails from the so-called Deaf Lottery thingy. As good it may sound, I ain't gonna fall for it.

Yep, a scam. My friend got scammed out of a few thousands of dollars by the same thing. U are lucky u asked here on AD before losing your money.

Hi Freter,

of course! it is scam!!!!... I never heard DEAF LOTTERY *laugh*
Please you think, if you want go to the safeway or Fry's store and get one lottery, but first you buy it. It is not scam!
Did you bought one lottery from DEAF LOTTERY?!?

5 Warning Signs:

1) There is NO Deaf Lotto Association! (What now? Gambling tix to fund HAs, education, etc???)

2) Desires to be near a rail line? No one in the western world will refer to mass transit as a rail line.

3) She mispells alot, not to mention horrible use of grammar. Sounds like a typical Nigerian set up to me.

4) She is willing to send rent to a complete stranger, not to mention she hasn't seen the place or met the occupants? Sounds like desperation to get you stiffed ASAP.

5) DO NOT fall for the cash the chack then transfer back tactic! The point is by the time you had already sent the funds, the check bounces, and your left responsible for covering what the check was withdrawn for.
