My job has turned me into a cynic... lol these days the people who will charge $100 for a lot of the vendors aren't trained professionally and they'll hurt the flow of the day. One of my brides is considering a DJ that costs $1,400.... meanwhile the "Craigslist DJs" are the ones who charge $200, get drunk and pack up early (by reputation... some are just trying to get started and I feel for them - it's competitive). For 3 years I interned for massive top wedding photographers who would be brought in to shoot in Hawaii or Bermuda... I've seen brides who spent 3,000 PER GOWN - three gowns in one day... 12 wedding cakes.... hiring a horse drawn carriage.... YET I've been responsible for making an entire wedding album without the ex-husband... most awkward edit of my life.
A funny wedding story from last weekend... (not so funny if you're the bride - must have been embarrassing) - the groom got drunk, started throwing F-bombs, threw a tantrum when I wouldn't give my camera to the bridesmaid to take a photo of him with me, made the bride cry and run off, and got lost for no one to find. When he was found the bride wouldn't even kiss him.
My advice with financials? They don't matter. Spend the money so that your day goes by without upsetting interruptions (this often means great food and a good DJ who can command a room and keep guests entertained.... nothing more awkward for guests then microphone feedback and dead silence for 5 minutes while they find your first dance track). People remember the great time they had which was what they eat and what they danced to or were surrounded by. Photography is what YOU remember your day as.... sometimes its the rare time that people come in from out of state or the only time you'll be in a white dress. Food, DJ, and photo.... those are the big 3 to budget.
