Planing on getting CI

I met with my ENT yesterday) Monday June 29th in Troy Ohio. I really like this dr. With everyone wearing mask etc, he spoke slowly and clearly enough and looked in my eyes asking me questions even though my husband was right there really made me feel good. I was able to understand pretty much most what he asked and said.

He said that I am highly candidate for CI in both ears. But depending on the insurance they want to do my good ear (left) first in case the INS says only 1 implant and have to wait few years for 2nd. But they said that both of my ears are bad and I qualify.

My next step is to get cat scan done to see the bone density then meet with the CI specialist on July 22nd then I will go back to my ENT on Aug 3rd to go further in what the next step will be. I am really hoping my INS would do both.

They gave be a folder full of Nucleus 7, no other brands but I will be asking when I meet again for other options.

My question is for you.

Which best brand you recommend or like and why? I will tell you what I am looking for. I work in a hot factory so water resistance would be nice, I miss talking on the phone with my mom so phone call is another. Also blue tooth capable.
 
In comparing brands you might want to got to this forum https://hearingjourney.com/. It is run by Advanced Bionics but also has a few members with other brands. They do offer the what they call a "T-mic" that sits at the opening to the ear and keeps you from having to hold a phone differently than some one with natural hearing. Also, they offer a couple of different ways to wear a processor that you can even swim with it on. I do not have any connection with AB but think that is the way I would go if I get the chance. This forum is fairly active especially when you consider the type of forum.

In the meantime, for calls with your mom or any other people you might want to consider this app https://www.innocaption.com if you have a phone that uses the Android OS or an iPhone. This is what I have used for years and really like. InnoCaption+ is the full name and they use live stenos. Their site does a good job of explaining what they offer but it is too much to give it all in this post.

Another app that I like for help in understanding in person is Live Transcribe which was developed by Google in cooperation with Gallaudet University (you may have heard of them they do mainly deaf education at the college level and above). This is just for Android phones though. Not enough info, not a big fan of CI, age and place, may be better now, Don t know, I hear good stories but not all, it's a big step, people who are not deaf can't tell you what your getting, hope it's for you:fingersx::fingersx:

I wear hearing aid in my left ear all my life. I wore one in my right when I was in school til 1994. The doctor said that I qualify for it and he did explain how insurance works with CI's. He said I have to be really bad in both ears which is the case. I can pick up sounds no problem with the aid in left ear but understanding words not much anymore.

Let hope you able understand words with CI better.
 
I struggle with words, my understanding it's in the brain, getting sound to it with CI, don't know if that will work, hope you know more than me, good luck :fingersx:

I can pick up many words, from voices I am familiar with. But if anyone is talking behind me or covered mouth forget it.

    I was able to schedule an appointment with the VA Audiologist in Palo Alto, California on August 31st and hope they will be able to do something to restore some measure of hearing. Every day has been a struggle trying to communicate. Most people think all they have to do is talk louder or shout and that's not my problem. COVID-19 has made getting an appointment any sooner impossible. Captioned I Phone, texting, email , writing notes has kept me from going batty. My hearing loss is service connected due to Korean Service 1953. I wore hearing aids in my 50's & 60's.

    My implant was left ear only.

I have a Cochlear Kanso processor that is not working.
 
You might want to do some research on CI, and ear amputations. My best friend is missing both ears, because the magnet was resonating too much fluids in her brain.

I tried to do what you suggest and could not find anything. Just what did you put in the search box?
 
Google scholars ;) I also have plenty of books about it. If you go over to pdfdrive.com, it will allow you to download many many books for free, all about CI's. You can even pass college classes with this website.

I think this is important for everyone to know: CI's does not effect everyone the way it does to my best friend. Ear amputations does not occur in everyone, but it does occur at least 6-12 time a month for children, and older adults. My best friend was 12. There are benefits, and downsides. I'm just here to educate.

Google scholars???? What made you think most of us would look there?
 
I am looking into a CI also. Haven’t gone to do the eval yet. Need to get an ABR done first. I’m looking at AB though since their HiRes 3D implant works with MRIs up to 3 Tesla which I do get on a semi regular basis. This was important for me. At one point I was looking at cochlear but AB had way more patents, etc and the information I’ve gained from users has been amazing for the most part.
