Sometimes if I ask someone to repeat themselves, they'll just stare at me like I'm crazy without saying anything and I'm like "Okay....awkward." This happen to anyone else?

All the time.

And the response I give back when I ask them what they said, and just stare with no response back.

"And people say I am the deaf one." Then they snap out of it.

I once took off my hearing aids and handed them to one person I know when I asked to repeat themselves, when they didn't respond. "Since you can't hear me, put them on". Figured they can use it more than me.

I've never had that happen. I always get the "never mind" response. Hate that.

If I knew how to sign I would not waste my time trying to sign to people that do not it. If I realize a person does not speak English I try to find someone that does.

Yep, staring and blank faces is something I get from time to time. And what sucks is that *I'm* the one left feeling stupid. I need to develop a bigger backbone.

It is much easier for them to recognizes me as a Deaf person. In the few years ago, I often get bother when i told them, " im deaf, then they speak to me in a loud voice" so I sign to them, either they know little ASL or search for a paper and pen ready or body language to communciate with me. :)

I've gotten over the deer in headlights look. Now I am the one that is the deer in headlights. Haha. Repeat repeat repeat!

Just tell them (point) that they've got a booger hanging out of their nose....It's rude to stare at someone...of course it isn't unless you're lip-reading them tho'....:giggle:

Neighbors stared at me. They know I'm freak as hearing impaired. I flip my middle finger at them. They gasped and walked away.

scopophobia/ophthalmophobia. I have a mild case of it. not fear but just annoyed.

If someone give me a DUH look I give them a couple minutes and if that don't work I'll get this grin on my face and either wink at them or blow them a kiss lol

Evo Dragon ya gotta change that siggy pic before it give me a seizure geez:eek3:

I once got the pity look when I was talking a woman , she notice my HA and gave me that " poor you look" I have no use for people like that. People will stare at when they hear we talk , they can't made out what kind of 'accent'
I have or think there is something wrong with me.

They just disbelieve me that I don't sound like deaf when after I told 'em. That's why they stared at me to figure out asked me again if I am deaf or not.

I decided summer weekends at my neighborhood grocery are hell. Kids get summer jobs and they don't know me...

They regular workers know I am deaf and don't bother me. Checking out this weekend a kid checker tried talking to me, and I couldn't figure out what she was saying at all. It ended with her rolling her eyes and giving up..
Then today again , she was in someone else's line talking to the checker working, and rolled her eyes and tossed her head as I rolled into the line. :(

On the other hand a four year old boy gave me a big smile and thumbs up as I left,. I think he liked my scooter.

You are more tolerant than I am. Because when I see someone roll their eyes at me after they realized I wasn't 'paying attention' because they never got my attention in the first place. I got no problem making an example out of them. And I talk loud enough so everyone around can hear me perfectly clear. By loud, I mean a little louder than normal talking. Not shouting. My voice caries.

I start off saying something along the lines of..

"Ah, this idiot hearing person is rolling their eyes at me. Got a problem with the fact I cannot hear you? Ah, yes. In case you didn't know, I got hearing aids in my ears. What does that mean? It means I cannot hear you to well. Want to keep rolling those eyes of yours?"

By then, they are white in the face, speechless and embarrassed. After I'm done talking, the manager/owner comes running out apologizing for anything that happened. They remember the next time they see me or another person who might be not able to hear well.

I'm pass the point of being embarrassed with my hearing lost. It doesn't bother me anymore.
