I wasn't sure where to put this thread in our world, our culture but it came to me it is about the language so I put it in Sign Language forum.

On to this discussion, I didn't know about Peoples Sign Language till my friend showed me the video about PSL. You probably won't like it after watching the video. Here's the video:

I didn't like the idea at all. I find it very pointless and I don't think anyone would ever wanted to change their native language to this... ludicrous PSL. Oh, please! :pissed:

There is a vblog about why PSL shouldn't be used at all. I totally agree with what he has to say about this. Welch's ASL Juice!: LEAVE OUR Language ALONE!

I had seen this vidoe few weeks ago in here... PSL SUCKS!!
 
Yeah, I saw it a couple weeks ago and thought it was funny. Of course, she has the right to express what she thinks. Although, she did say that the original thought came to her in a moment of artistic feelings. But it appears now that she's kinda serious about it. However, it will never fly!

She can do whatever she wants for herself but she know damn well she can not change the way our language is. My two cents: her artistic feelings are painfully exaggerating.

Yea, I had one too... but gosh I couldn't understand what the hell was she talking abt so I turned it off early cuz I don't like it at all!! Just too much anyway!! And I was going to post the topic abt it but found this here...whew! Save my time, ha!
 
I stopped watching it cuz her signing was hurting my eyes. Her talking at the same time really made her signing awkward and unclear.
 
I've seen this quite a few times on youtube and Deafread.com.. And personally, I have to say while she can express her ideas, she seems to forget a few important things.. most of the changes she wants to make are awkward at best for deaf people. Plus, she is mainly using her right hand.. and there are a lot of left hand signers that would not benefit from this. Besides.. I have never seen anyone complain about the signs that she wants to change.

Good point you made there. Sometimes the left hand side wouldn't be benefitting for the right handed signers, too.
 
plus.. a lot of people think she's hearing.. but she clearly states she is deaf. and she learned ASL late.. like a lot of deaf people.. but she really needs to study deaf history more.. if you look at the 2nd part of her project.. she changes the countries of the world based on location, not culture... What is she smoking? Most deaf people respect other countries by showing how they are different, and most signs that we use are either what we create for different countries, or what that specific country has asked us to use. I remember a interpreter told me that many different countries asked US to change ASL signs to respect that country's culture..
 
I didn't like the countries signs one bit. My first impression of her signing Hawaii... I'm going to Pulse on my Vacation. Seems awkward.

The sign for the countries must have a reason, for example Japan. You sign that, because it's the shape of this country. So go on with many countries. You can't just say it with a letter on your body wherever it is supposed to be.
 
right.. plus some signs might be confused with names of people or other similar signs.. so she obviously didn't check.
 
FYI - Melissa created PSL video in 2002 so it seemed that is not success anyway. I am sure it will NOT accomplish someday!

welcome to political correctness in sign language, us hearing have had to deal with it for years.
 
Political correctedness is all good and fine.. but I believe asl nowadays tries to base their signs on the signs that the individual country has for their country. I remember when there were signs for various countries that were not politically correct.. I only remember the signs that I use now, I don't remember what I used before.. And I had an intepreter teach me the new signs because ASL changed. And my only way of knowing new signs was via interpreters. I think a good example was the Chinese sign.. which From what I remember was putting your pointer finger near your eye to symoblize the almond shape of the eye.. and now the sign for china is left pointer finger touching right shoulder, then left shoulder and then left hip.
So ASL changes as we try to respect other countries. But the way she signed them i was like.. Where's the cultural respect??? I doubt each country wants to be known by where they are located!
 
I saw this video last week. I think it's pointless. I do understand her effort, but she isn't going to get anywhere.

This is more of a "politically correct" sign language video. ;)
