I just can't believe the human garbage out there. God bless those good Samaritans in Veterinary care and decent average Joes that watch out for these animals....

It's been more than a year since a starving puppy was found at the bottom of a trash chute of a large apartment building in Newark, New Jersey.

On March 16, 2011, the building's superintendent found the emaciated and shivering dog -- who'd been wrapped in a plastic bag -- just seconds before he would've been swallowed up by the trash compacter.

The dog was named Patrick because he was discovered the day before St. Patrick's Day. Rescuers didn't think he would survive another 24 hours. But he did. And his story is something of a miracle.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Kisha Curtis, the dog's 27-year-old owner, had tied him to a railing and left him there for a week. It's unclear if she threw him down the chute or if someone else did.

Patrick was then taken in and cared for by the Associated Humane Societies in New Jersey, reported ohmidog.com Volunteers took him to Garden State Veterinary Services where a giant hairball was removed from his stomach so that he could begin to eat again.

"The veterinary staff immediately put him on intravenous fluid. His temperature was so low that it did not even register on the thermometer," says Patrick's Facebook page. He soon became an Internet celebrity, with donations pouring in from around the world.

Patrick weighed 19 pounds when he arrived at the hospital. He now weighs 50 pounds. Recently, Reddit user dikfeld uploaded a series of photos showing the dog's transformation over the last year.

Associated Humane Societies is seeking custody of Patrick, whose newfound fame is being used to advocate for stricter animal abuse laws. AHS wants to find a new forever-home for Patrick.

Garden State Veterinary Specialists of Tinton Falls, however, is also vying for a part in Patrick's plight. He has been staying with Patricia Smillie-Scavelli, the hospital’s administrator, who also wants to keep the brave dog.

“He really gives love,” Scavelli told Irish Central. “He climbs into your lap, he would prefer to sit in your lap than lay on the floor. He also sleeps in our bed at night, along with the cat.”

However, a few physical scars remain from Patrick's ordeal. NBC reports that he is still fearful of strangers, but when fed a few dog treats, he quickly warms up.

Curtis is scheduled to appear in court on charges of animal cruelty. She is not accused with tossing Patrick down the chute, only with neglect and abandonment.

Oh my God!...Hoping the Judge throws the book at the dog's owner....and the Owner is lucky he/she doesn't live in my neighborhood.....

Good Luck, Patrick!...There are some good pet owners in the world and luckily, you found some angels to bring you back to good health.

I am glad he was saved, but it is hard to envision the cruelty that humans are possible of.

that's why we passed a new law called Patrick's Law that would increase the penalty and severity of the punishment

I saw the pictures a couple days ago. It's a miracle!

I'm glad they found him and took care of him!

How horrible that poor dog looked! The owner should be throw down a cute and left to die!

i just can't get into mindset of people who do this, same people breed children, sometimes there case for nads be chopped save world from these cruel people

I remember a story about a special needs dog, a pit bull, that belonged to a little girl. It was stolen right off the front porch and used for dog fighting. Either the SOB saw the story and knew he couldn't get away with it, or someone decent stole it from him and returned it to the little girl. Poor dog was traumatized by the experience. The mother says the girl was delighted to get the dog back but now the dog was scared to be around people. It should be mandatory ten years in jail for abusing animals with seven years parole and lifetime ban on owning an animal.

People always bitch how dangerous this breed is, but they pay no attention to the bad owners that are responsible. Everyone takes it out on the poor dog demanding the death of the entire breed. Really makes me sick....it's obvious by this dog's relationship with his family that they're good dogs. People that abuse animals and target a specific breed should see jail time. Period.

I'm also following this story and let me tell you I cried my eyes out! But when I saw his amazing recovery I found myself smiling again. I'm so glad someone found him and the vet didn't give up on him. I hope he NEVER goes back to that horrible owner, the custody battles need to stop and they need to be thinking of Patrick's best interest. He's alive, a being, not some property and needs to be where he is happy. Previous owner is up for court soon.

I wonder why the Humane Society is trying to adopt Patrick? The article says the hospital administrator wants to adopt him, and the Humane Society should be happy that Patrick has he knows (he's been staying with that lady) to adopt him.

Use him for profit from donations and publicity because his case is so famous.

Oh, I didn't think of that. Well, as long as he's well-cared for, I guess it's a good idea. The humane society can really use the donations.

I don't think he should be used like that, if hes happy in his current home he should be left alone. His story can carry on, but the dog has been through enough and deserves a shot at a normal life, back yard, warm family. They need to look at it from the heart, not for money, thats wrong.

Unfortunately, Pit Bulls are the one breed of dog targeted by people for abuse. People jump on stories when these dogs bite, they don't care when the dogs are abused. That said, they really don't have a "normal" life compared to other more popular dog breeds. Helping to raise money, and awareness, is the kindest thing they can do for these animals, and those the money helps. I've no doubt the dog will be treated like royalty - and more importantly, he'll be kept safe.

At the clinic where I volunteer, pit bulls are the most frequent dogs that people bring in that they found abandoned.
