Pain in the CI area?

Hello! I know I haven't posted in quite a while. This issue has been bothering me for a few months and I was wondering if anyone went through the same thing as I am right now.

I have a CI on the right side of my head. I got it when I was 7 years old, and I'll be 23 next month. I only use it on occasion such as whenever I'm home alone without my roommates' dogs or I'm in the mood for music. I stopped wearing it regularly when I was 17.

Lately, especially when I'm trying to fall asleep, there is pain specifically where the CI and the scar are if I have the right side of my head on the pillow. The pain is enough to make me turn over to the left side. Also, when I touch a particular area of the CI, the pain is sharp. When nothing is touching the area, I'm completely fine. This started a few months ago and I thought it'd go away.. but it's still here.

Have you guys experienced something similar to this? Of course I'll go to a doctor to check it out sometime this month, I'm just curious.
 
go to the doctor. it could be serious especially it is something new and not going away at all. I had mine since 2003 and I don't experience that kind of pain.
 
go to the doctor and seek the advise of someone who is qualified to diagnose the problem. You can't get an accurate diagnosis form unqualified people on the inernet.

I am going to see one this month. 1994 for me.. it's been a long time!

I wasn't asking for a diagnosis. I already said I was going to see a doctor in the original post. I just wanted to know if someone else has experienced something similar to this. From what I've searched online, it seems like it's not a common issue with CIs. Strange.

Yeah, Anakin, the dearth of similar instances such as yours does, indeed, imply seeing a doctor asap. Your appointment can't be soon enough. Best wishes on this....hope all goes well for you. Keep us posted.
 
whoa anakin - long time no see! and yea... like what everybody said - go see your doc. I don't have a dang clue cuz I don't have CI

Well, it may be something with the internal magnet of your CI, but I do not have any better ideas related with these CI (I did some research about CIs in the past) so what the others suggested, to speak with your doctor)

That may be it. her magnet headpiece could be too strong. Also, My ear does get alittle raw because of ezcema.
 
Maybe it's a brown recluse bite?
Seriously, it makes my skin crawl to see this sort of stuff ignored. Go see the doc for heaven's sake.
 
Hard to think of having pain now- 16 years after the Cochlear Implant operation. You clearly should see the surgeon who did the original- to check if you are developing some "infection". Hopefully not. From my limited experience of 3 years-no pain whatsoever.

She already knows to go to the doctor; she was just asking if anyone has had a similar experience.

I only wish she'd go sooner but you know how it is nowadays trying to get in to see a doc.....
 
My friend just had a CI when she was a 7 yrs old. She was in pain when it turns on and the sound goes on and been on for a little over year. She quitted using it for a several months then she finally saw the audiologist and realize that she got something wrong with CI inside. She had re surgery all over again to be fixed. She realizes that she feels MUCH better now and she didn't know why she waited too long. She can use it from now on. That's all i know.
 
I'll keep everyone posted about this. The appointment is on November 4th (that's the soonest they could do - busy office!) with my ENT who is also a CI specialist.

JClarke, hello! I'm not sure about the magnet. It could be something else. :dunno: To what deafgal001 said in response to your post, both internal and external magnets are still functioning. I haven't noticed a change in strength.

PFH, maybe, maybe.. who knows? I don't think there's enough research on the effects of the CI after having it for a long time. It was approved by the FDA in the '80s. Hopefully I won't be needing surgery, ugh. Nothing lasts forever, gotta keep that in mind..

Beowulf, if it was a brown recluse spider, I'd be dead already! :lol: I've just been so busy with school and work that I haven't really thought about seeing a doctor until recently. Plus, you could find a picture of me next to the definition of broke college student. :)

drphil, that would mean I'd have to drive to Miami from Orlando.. blergh. I don't even know if my CI surgeon is still there - let alone his name! I'll ask for it the next time I talk to my mom.

Frisky Feline, that's interesting.. thank you. I sure do hope I won't be needing surgery, but that's always a possible thing. :( I didn't have pain while I had the sound on. It was a personal choice to stop using it.

I was just assuming the ways of these affected, however I don't know a LOT about CI. I am just a CI less person.

As for your CI pain, it's possible that the implant is migrating/shifting beneath your skin and coming into contact with a nerve, or there could be an infection developing.

Hope it all works out and is nothing serious. Come visit us in the AIMblast sometime.
