Origin of AIDS

Do you really want to understand this?

Do you know the HIV life cycle?

RNA's Reverse transcriptase?
HIV Receptor sites?

I could go on, you have to understand what they are to know how HIV works.

enlighten us! I was fascinated about it in high school biology class. Virus is one of my favorite subject to read about. but it's been too long. Time for refresher course!

Well - it is already known that AIDS/HIV originated in West-central Africa. African tribes do hunt and eat chimpanzee for many years.

Chimpanzee and Human are 98% genetically similar. We've seen what happens when you feed cow meat to cow..... which resulted in bovine spongiform encephalopathy... aka Mad Cow. It's a neurodegenerative disease.

We've seen what happened to offspring when it comes to incest.... which will result in congenital birth defects.

Do you see what all above have one thing in common? recessive gene.

good to know
I didn't know we could pull quotes from other threads.

I just know the basics, I'm sure you'll be expanding on the topics we covered "briefly" compared to your education. If you feel like educating us, please do!

It's called a spin off. It really helps to take an idea from another line of thought. Other boards I'm on use them. With the lead S/O in the title.

:( I actually don't feel like writing out a full lesson on HIV yet. I don't even know why this thread all started.
c'mon! Think like Dr. Ramachandran!!!

What's actually going on here?
Bott created this to prevent hijacking book thread. This thread is a good idea... a great breath of change!

In the "recently purchased books" thread I posted 6 books that I am required to read for an apprenticeship this summer, one of which is "Eating Apes" about humans causing the extinction of chimpanzees and then about AIDS, so we all started discussing it, and then the first person made the new thread here.

Gosh "mutated so quickly" is creepy. You know your stuff. What else did you learn about the mutation? Are their estimates when it started? Like how quick was it?

Well - it is already known that AIDS/HIV originated in West-central Africa. It was said that AIDS got transferred from Africa to Haiti. Therein.... it spreads around... All because of modern technology - airplane, boats, cars, etc. Everything moves around further and faster at exponential rate especially because of urbanized societies (cities) where there is a very large number of people in one place.

It is possible that the AIDS appeared in humans for many many many years. Over time - it mutated within human into a very destructive virus. and now... I guess we just started to see its destructiveness in around 80's.

my post above - it was covered here in this fascinating book.

"Population: An Introduction to Concepts and Issues"

Ok, well I can start out basic before we go in depth.

The origin of aids has been closely believed from most scientists to have arisen from a mutation of the virus within central Africa.
Genetic research on the subject has led to the conclusion that HIV type 2, which is a weaker variant, and rarely (or not found) outside of Africa at all. It comes from a mutation of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) which is also known as the Green monkey virus, very major in Africa because it's pandemic to many species.

Recently studies have proved that HIV type 1 (the primary one that affects us) has genetic relations with the SIV in central africa.

SIV is only seen to affect monkeys as the host, and nothing else. Secondly, SIV is carried only by these monkeys in Africa.

Chimps can have an AIDs-like illness but it is not the same AIDS that humans have. If a human has AIDS as a recessive and gets bite by a chimp who is infected, it can activate it, but it is not from them.

I need to understand what you are implying here. It's not making too much sense.

In other words, we all have a dormant HIV gene in all of us, but once bitten by the ape it turns our HIV genes in us on? Like activated from a chimp bite?

You know, you gonna have to dumb that shit down for us non microbio majors. So.how does the virus move from ape to human? Sex? That's human to human. Ingestion? Can I get AIDS by eating infected apes? How?

Yeah, you can get viruses from eating infected animals, sex, or any form of contact that will let the virus get into your bloodstream (open wounds, mouth, etc).

The problem is you don't know if a monkey is infected, and importantly with what. Primates/ monkeys are very similar in DNA genetics to us, there is a mixed consensus on what percentage are they similar in, I just personally think it's 9X%+, anywhere from 90% to 99.99%.

If you replace the monkey with human then easily transmissible. You can get it from eating infected flesh, organs, or having infected blood get into your wounds. Let your imagination run, as long as virions are getting into your bloodstream you've got a chance at the virus.

haha all i have to say is gross. haha. So last question: you mean chimps right? Cause monkeys are not primates. Or is it also in monkeys?

Did you see the word Primate in what you quoted in my post?

The person asked a question about viruses. They exist whether you believe it or not.
Getting infected from a monkey is another question, which is what I told to the person I quoted. I'm not talking about HIV.

I'm talking about any virus IN primates / monkeys / apes / whatever else you want to call them.

You can get bitten from SIV (Green Monkey Virus) but the question is whether or not you will be infected with it.

My threads are clean. Kindly refrain from foul language.

got it. :)

eat. African tribes eat it raw. drink blood. who knows. maybe bitten. or got it from other animal which ate chimp.
