I think he should have left the cub there for the mother to find. He could have monitored it from a distance. If the mother didn't show up in a couple days, then a wild animal rescue group could have picked it up. It's not a good idea for untrained people to take wild animal babies.

I read some of comments from the article. Male bears will kill the cubs to induce mothers to go into heat so maybe mama died defending her cub or its a castaway if bear had alot cubs n was a spare. So anything is possible.
