Here is a link to an interesting site. They display dozens of optical illusions, with explanations on why they work. Look on the right side of the page and click on one of the little windows. Enjoy!

Optical Illusions and Visual Phenomena

I remember showing one to my teacher in my color theory class. She got hooked on optical illusions ever since...

Needless to say, she's always loved bright colors.

I did a research paper for a class at RIT on this subject. It was for a psychology class related to perception. My group picked optical illusions. We included a few pictures to show the class and they were well-done. We got a good grade for it. :)

Half of the pictures we used were from M. C. Escher... a well-known artist for his optical illusion images. :)

I love Escher's work.

Escher staircases, my favorite, although I think this is perspective and not optical illusion.

Yes, you are correct. All of Eschers drawings can be reduced to mathematical equations. I have "staircases" hanging just to the right of where I am now sitting.

Yeah, it depends on how you look at it. One thing about optical illusions is that when you follow an image one way and it changes perspective at the end, then it can be considered an optical illusion. :)

When I did my research, half the sources I checked said that some of MC Escher's works were optical illusions and others said that his works were simply "distorted art".

I guess like the true definition of art is how one appreciates art.
