it is also my understanding that this oil reservoir underneath the earth's surface had enough pressure that when it ruptured, it blew up the oil rig a mile above it.
And it is still gushing out.
It is .... disheartening. It is also obvious that nobody knows how to stop it.
Cleaning it up is going to be another matter entirely.
1. BP was never interested in coming up with clean-up technology
2. BP boasted about blowout preventer as the most advanced way to stop the leak (epic fail at it too)
3. Because of its defective blowout preventer - the oil rig was not able to stop it from gushing which leads to explosion... which leads to oil rig to be destabilized.. which leads to pipes underwater to be broken.
It is old drilling method - drill until you hit the jackpot and it will gush it out. Then you stop the flow to put in the pipe and then let it go. Sometimes the pressure is too great or sometimes the procedure to put the pipe in went wrong... so that leads to uncontrollable gushing out. The most common method to fix it is to use a large amount of TNT and bring it there.
