Ohio woman, 89, arrested for keeping kids' ball

Edna Jester faces a charge of petty theft after football landed in her yard

BLUE ASH, Ohio - An 89-year-old Ohio woman faces a charge of petty theft because neighborhood children say she refused to give back their football.

Edna Jester was placed under arrest last week and taken to the police station in the Cincinnati suburb of Blue Ash. Police say there had been an ongoing dispute over the errant football and a child's father called to report that Jester kept the ball after it landed in her yard.

Blue Ash Police Capt. James Schaffer says police warned Jester twice and finally arrested her after she refused to accept a citation. She must appear in mayor's court next month.

Jester said Monday she didn't have time to discuss the incident, saying she has received many phone calls about it.

:jaw:

The article didn't write much why she keep kid's ball... I guess that it could be that woman had been complaint to the parents of kids to bother her yard with ball had been ignored, so she decided to keep the ball ?

I find silly that she was being arrested because she keep kid's ball...

What do you think of this?

Both are so wrong.

It's her yard, she pay tax and she do whatever she want.

But... if kid or parents ask in nice way to return kids' balls. Then something wrong with old woman's mind.

If there was an ongoing dispute, then this is not the first time that the kids ball has ended up in her yard. Maybe the parent needed to take measures to make sure that his kid wasn't disturbing the neighbors instead of being so quick to call the police and have an 89 year old woman arrested. His actions don't do much to teach his child respect for others, or how to accept the consequences of his choices. Boo to this parent!

I saw it on the news, the neighborhood children were playing football and it landed on her yard, not sure if it was an accident or on purpose. Father tried to get the ball back and it's been going on for awhile, so he had no choice but to call the police.

I don't know how many times this has happened.

She was unwilling to give the football back after the police warned her twice to.

Some says she did not like children, I dunno if that is true. We don't have the full details to this story yet.

Wow, I think its very silly for that... That woman might have her own reason to keep the football since we know how kids are... Hmm, I would like to hear that woman's side of story then we could understand the completely story. Wow... Thats so crazy

Ohio woman, 89, arrested for keeping kids’ ball - The Herald Dispatch

The football, valued at $15, is being held for evidence, Schaffer said.

The potential maximum penalty for a petty theft conviction in Ohio is six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. Schaffer said he suspects the mayor or presiding magistrate will take into account her age and lack of criminal record when the case comes up.

What a  :jaw:

It's werid to treat old lady as a crime like that over that stupid ball.

I believe the father did have a choice. He should have gone home and told his kids, "Sorry, but you don't get the ball back. That's life--actions have consequences, and I hope that you will learn from this."

There was no reason to drag the police into this.

:ty: for share what you saw on TV.

It seem to me that the kids didn't show respect for old woman? It could be that she has good reason to keep the ball.

Yes I know many elders could be very stubborn sometimes... You know how elders are...

I think it's pretty pathetic to charge very old lady like that...

I absolutely agree that he should have done that instead of making a big fuss over a football.

just a cranky-ass old lady. We all have experienced a person like that when we were young, playing sport on street.

One in every neighborhood. It think it excessive to arrest the lady. I think it ridiculous that the parents called the police over a ball.

Just seems like a normal old lady. Most kids know to stay away and be careful. I think the father was wrong to call the police on her. Should have disciplined the kids to behave considerately.
