Do deaf and death sound same???

I'm trying to figure out what the deal with this is, too. "Deaf" and "death" don't look the same to me with speech reading. I suppose they would kind of sound the same if I could not speech read. Specifically the "f" and "th" sounds.

Confuse me. I never understand when I see here people say death mean deaf. Not close meaning so must close sound??

Yeah, they sound very much alike. But I'm not sure what the "joke" is. Do hearing people regularly confuse the two words, or something? Or does it have nothing to do with how the word "deaf" is heard by others? :dunno:

The other day, a new janitor comes into my office to pick up the trash and says hi and makes little jokes with me. She noticed my accent and was like "Where are you from??". "I was born in Miami." "But you have an accent." "Yes.. that's because I am deaf." "OH MY GOD!! You are DEATH?! WOW! That is so cool!! Born death!?"

You have no idea how much I wanted to say "Yep! Ive been Death all of my life!"

I get the "lucky" thing all the time. Sometimes, I pull the joker thing: "I may look happy and lucky on the outside, but really I am crying inside." Many people respond with "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry. I'm sure its not easy..." Hahaha....

I would have said "yup I am one lucky stiff"

When people are kids, it's hard to distinguish between the two. I know I got them mixed up. Some people might have a pronunciation issue, but the two words sound very much alike. I think most hearing people don't get them confused, but then, I might be wrong. I rarely hear them mixed up.

I think it's mainly pronunciation. We say one word when we mean another that sounds alike or something of the sort.

I don't get joke either. Silly hearies.

Deaf and Death.....it's the "tongue" or the "lisp" of some hearing people who pronounce these words...a common mispronounation in children & teens....the last two syllables "ef" and "th"....seem to sort of stick on the tongues of some hearies.......I've been deaf for 50 years, but remmy this very well, even had a little problem pronouncing "deaf/death" myself and one of my sons has a slight speech impediment and pronounced these 2 words like this....

^ this.

In hearie speak, the 'f' and 'th' use different syllables, but people don't know this, including other hearing immigrants and foreigners.

It's like saying sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth for the correct 'th' sound. The 'f' is supposed to be pronounced differently. Since it can get confusing, that is why a lot of deaf don't prefer to speak and write or sign instead.

I get the "death" thing often. I tell them that I didnt realize that I have died and now a ghost and thank them for letting me know.

What I don't get is that we have family members and/or friends who died. They can say "death" but if they are referring me as deaf knowing full well there is a f after the dea. I think they would rather have me dead as being death to them. I was not happy when I told my nephews that they can not read the word "deaf" and had the damn word "death" as if I died in their eyes. Gees. What gives?

They are the ones who should learn how to speak in the speech therapy to get that corrected whatever they speak mispronounced words that they can not speak clearly. Here we are as deaf people has to go through speech therapy trying to say the right words and never had any fun with our own Deaf group. Being in the mainstream schools is just being mean to us. Damn.

I have seen a number of people say "death" instead of "deaf". Almost all of them are hearing. I think it's because they sound sound so much alike that hearies don't correct each other on the sound (assuming they hear well enough to hear the difference). We see the mouth shapes and the difference to us is way more pronounced than it is for the hearies. And we visualize the word which really throws us off.

I've also seen (lipread) "birfday" instead birthday...

But that's kind of a ghetto thing...

Silly me. I sometimes confuse these two words (I was born and raised in Turkey so the accent) but everybody can get it from the context. Which one is more possible? I am deaf or I am death?

Imagine deaf and death as pictures. Do they look similar? They don't in my mind. Intellectually I know what the person is really trying to say, but it still throws me for a loop from which takes a few seconds to recover. But by then the hearing person usually thinks there is something wrong with me.

You know the guy dressed in black robes carrying a scythe who calls himself Death? Well, there's actually a whole bunch of 'em that work in shifts, and one of them calls himself Deaf Death. :giggle: ;)
