So before my audi apt this morning I went to starbucks. didn't have my HA's because... frankly I lost them :( I asked for a piece of paper wrote my order... then when i finished paying... the guy signed f* you to me... I was amazed... I asked him to write what he meant by that... then he said thank you... has any one ever encountered this before? where someone is trying, really is trying to be nice but instead insults you? I corrected him, and he seemed really embarrassed, but boy... was it a shock...

At first, I thought you meant the middle finger! I was thinking, "Wow, common sense right there! Middle finger means fuck you and even non-signing people know it."

And then I remembered another sign for fuck you which is very very close to "thank you" that you could quite possibly be referring to. You did the right thing and corrected him. Now he knows better for future deaf customers.

yeah, it looks like the Starbucks here trys to teach their employees at least some basic sign... they could say help and all done, trying to communicate... so that was helpful at least... especially since I haven't met a huge Deaf Population here... I would love to meet more, I feel kinda isolated here. At least he tried... thats what i kept telling him... you tried.

Not a big Deaf population in Denver? When did you move there?

True Story..
When I was working at the U.S.P.S., one suprevisior ask a deaf employee how to sign "Good evening"...the supevisior wanted to greet the deaf as they came to work and clocked on each evening. The deaf person taught the supervisior a sign and the next night the supervisior started using it... some deaf laugh their heads off and some just moved away quick. So the supervisior ask me what was going on and explain the situation and then I ask him to do the sign for me and ask who taught the supervisior that sign... knowing which deaf taught the supervisior, I was not suprised that he was signing to the deaf "motherfucker". I had to warn him not to ask certain deaf because they hated him, something he was not aware of.

I've only been here a year... and I haven't found another Deaf person near me, its been so isolating... my area (glendale) doesn't have much of a Dhh population from what i can see... If you know of anywhere in Denver to meet other Deaf people, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me!

well i'm on the outskirts of Glendale... but yes it is pretty nice... no Parker or Boulder... but nice. Where you at?

Many of the Starbucks encourage the Deaf Coffee meets. I go to one near me in Florida.

It is EASY for new signers, or those who don't sign often to make rather BIG mistakes without knowing it. You did the right thing to correct him. I know once I signed what I thought was "work" and it was something else..... I am soooo glad someone corrected me!

My daughter who is a deaf had experience it too, it's good that you corrected him.
