Offended by ASL students?

:fruit:

no I do not know but like I said - I'm more interested in how you speculated it than what happened in this incident.
you need to get your glasses fixed and then go back and read the thread.

Here in houston, that is what we do at our asl socials. We teach and enjoy the new signers because we know at perhaps someday in the future these will be our interpreters. Granted, there are some of the deaf that do not wish to be bothered by these newbies but there are still plenty of us willing to socialize and assist anyone and everyone.

+1. You will find disagreeable people in any culture. They don't, however, reflect what is true for the majority.

But I also have to commend this poster on asking what is offensive or not instead of just assuming one way or the other.

How many times do you have to hear the exact same thing before you can state that it is a cultural majority opinion? A dozen? A hundred?

Make fun of me as much as you want, but it is a valid question.

I'm not making fun of you. Just pointing out the contradictions in your posts and the fact that you are very good at seeing in others what is glaringly present in you.

"A girl came up to them and told them that her Dad was deaf and was offended that they were signing to eachother because they were hearing."

The antecedent in this sentence isn't clear.

Is the meaning this?

"A girl came up to them and told them that her Dad was deaf and he was offended that they were signing to each other because they were hearing."

Or was it this?

"A girl came up to them and told them that her Dad was deaf, and she was offended that they were signing to each other because they were hearing."

Was the deaf father present? If not, how would he be offended? :dunno:

Reba, can you come and teach my English class for me?

BTW, I'm going to play devil advocate's here and say there are certain situations where I'd be offended by hearing people using ASL. That would be if they are acting like idiots and being goofy, not showing respect to the language and treating ASL like it's some sort of system of miming and inordinate gesturing. I have seen that before, and yes, it does offend me.

I would take the same offense to a native French speaker treating English the same way. Being d/Deaf has nothing to do with it.
