Obama Reportedly Considering Former Rival for Secretary of State
By Jim Malone
Washington
14 November 2008

Senator Hillary Clinton of New York has reportedly emerged as a candidate to be secretary of state in the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama. Meanwhile, Mr. Obama has a meeting Monday with his former Republican opponent for the White House, Senator John McCain. VOA National correspondent Jim Malone has more from Washington.

Senator Clinton reportedly met with Mr. Obama in Chicago on Thursday.

But prior to a speech in New York on Friday, Clinton declined to say whether she was in the running to be the next secretary of state.

"Let me just say that I am not going to speculate or address anything about the president-elect's incoming administration, and I am going to respect his process and any inquiries should be directed to his transition team," she said.

Clinton and Obama were bitter rivals during the Democratic presidential primaries earlier this year. Some Clinton supporters were disappointed that Obama did not pick her as his vice presidential running mate, choosing Senator Joe Biden of Delaware instead.

Some Clinton associates like the idea of her becoming secretary of state. "She is an exceptional person, a great listener, someone who can look at the world through other people's perspectives," said former Clinton White House aide Lanny Davis on the Early Show on CBS television. "I think she has made a great U.S. senator for that reason, and I'm sure would make a great secretary of state for that reason."

Clinton's name has now been added to a speculative list of names for secretary of state that includes Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, both Democrats.

Republican Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana has also been mentioned, as has former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.

Political experts note that, so far, few details have leaked out about which individuals are being considered for various jobs in the new administration.

William Galston worked in the Clinton administration and is now at the Brookings Institution in Washington. He's also a guest on VOA's Encounter program.

"We know very little because the transition team has been very discreet, and what was said of the [former President Ronald] Reagan transition, I think, is true of this one - those who know aren't talking, and those who are talking don't know," said Galston.

Meanwhile, the Obama transition team said the president-elect will meet Monday with his former Republican opponent, Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Experts do not expect Obama to offer McCain a job in the new administration, but they could talk over various areas of potential cooperation, once the new administration takes over in January.

"They will probably talk about the future, how Barack Obama can incorporate John McCain into his plans for governing," said Marc Ambinder, a political consultant for CBS News and an editor at the Atlantic magazine. "Remember, John McCain's core identity is that of a maverick and a reformer, someone who crosses party lines."

The Obama transition team is expected to announce more White House staff and Cabinet nominees in the coming weeks.

Barack Obama will be inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building on January 20.

It's the truth--you wear kilts--I don't!

Secondly when you attack the government of the United States--you are also attacking the citizens of the USA. Afterall, our government is "of the people, for the people, and by the people".

Which sadly--the United Kingdom isn't.

Now the topic is future Secretary of State--I think Hillary will get it.

Democrats are pretty passive when it comes to foreign policy though, much of the time they prefer the UN to sort it out via diplomacy and negotiations with our support of course. Its not a mystery that during the Clinton years, Al-Queda became strong, as did other nations that seem to bitterly rule in disfavor of the United States. Clinton reduced the military, closed bases, etc. While thats not all bad of course, it did allow the world to breathe again as thats not always good with irresponsible countries who have no idea and cant control what the fuck is going on within their borders. Yes Bush was a pompous asshole who didnt mind taking ahold of the reigns so to speak and hastily make decisions--for better or worse, but he did it. In a way, i do respect that and sure enough people dont fuck with us of course. Its just too bad he was an arrogant bastard and jumped the gun on many issues which led to his demise as a leader prompting the fact when it all became clear and exposed it led to a few things that were constued as misleading, etc. And for that im disappointed.

We'll see if Obama has balls, though. Actually as much as it sounds like me being an asshole, id like to see a hostile situation arise where he keeps his composure and has that candor a leader in his position is supposed to possess and handle it with dignity and gracefulness. Should he be weak, then he's just going to lose respect around the world as a leader and others will take advantage of his inability to capitalize. To just step on a snake by the throat and cut the fuckers head off, will he be able to do that? Or will he call an exterminator who overcharges and doesnt do the job hes capable of doing? Time will tell, time will tell.

Actually, Al Qaeda started to gain strength when George H. W. Bush was in office.

And now it will start to go away. We shiver and shake at any mention of Al Queda for now, but once we catch up with the rest of the world we will realize we have been duped again.

True.

Do you think Obama is consider about secretary of state for Hillary Clinton or not?? How do you feeling if he pick Hillary? Please debate here. Please no :topic:

I think Hillary would be an excellent choice for Secretary of State given her extensive background in politics and familiarity with the job position. She also knows how to negotiate which can be an added plus when it comes to foreign affairs. I hope she gets the nomination.

Excuse me for off topic.

Pinky - I'm not too sure about Hillary Clinton being Secretary of State but I would support her. I have heard of some rumor about Obama Administration letting McCain in.... possibly Secretary of Defense... or maybe Secretary of State. Who knows? I really hope Obama would just announce it immediately... especially US Attorney General. I want to see many under Bush Administration be held accountable.

How do you all feel about McCain possibly being chosen as Secretary of Defense? Can't say that I have an opinion one way or the other -- at least not yet.

McCain has extensive experience in this kind of matter. Hillary has extensive experience in OTHER kind of matter. Therefore - it makes a nice good little team, don't you think?

I have heard of story that Obama will meet McCain later (i don't know if they already did) so I'm assuming he's offering SECDEF spot for him. Who knows! :dunno2:

McCain and Obama can work together just fine. Both of them are liberals at heart. :)
