My boyfriend has been deaf since birth he's worn hearing aids all his life and they really don't help him that much. Each year his hearing gets worse, and he's only 17 so I always ask myself "How old will he be until he's completely deaf?" And our relationship has taken a nose dive. As of this fall he will start attending a school for the deaf instead of public school, I really just don't know what to do anymore but since I'm only 16 so what can I really do?

If he don't get benefits with HA then CI will be final choice for him because CI would help to hear so well, more clearly than HA but it required to surgery and most health insurance will cover it.

Yes, CI is supposed to be great for those with progressive losses. I know you're sad that he's going away, but think of it as he left early for college or something....

A CI might be best solution but success can vary from one person to another. so don't keep your expectations too high. good luck :)

I'm always worried that he's going to meet a girl who understands him better while he's there...

Nonsense! If you're hearing and he's deaf, it can work! I am hearing and in love with a deaf woman. We love each other very much and she says I understand her more than any of her deaf ex-boyfriends could.

What I recommend is you to learn to sign, whether or not he gets a cochlear implant. There are good books on the topic, and http://www.aslpro.com will teach you some signs. His implant might not work if he gets one, so be prepared for anything if you are that afraid of losing him. It only took me 1 year to sign well enough to talk to my gf about anything without using my voice. :)

Hope this helps.

Thanks I know how to sign, but what is a cochlear implant?

If haven't hear about CI then do you have try to use body worn hearing aids?

There is an Austrian company that makes them. Here is the website, which you can read in German assuming it's your mother tongue.
