everybody already knew. Russians knew about it already.

why don't you look into who these scientists were and what they do. trust me.... they knew very well what they were in for and they accepted it. but they regretted it after a-bombs were dropped on Japanese. Oppenheimer took it quite badly. Most scientists were young and ambitious. Nobody could ever predict or even fathom how devastating and destructive it could be... neither did Harry Truman. that's why I'm glad that the Americans dropped it first... it virtually ended the war and changed the world into better place. like I said... not a single country has ever nuked anybody else since then.

it's probably best if you stick with reality instead of drumming up with bunch of wild conspiracy theories. and trust me... the Russian can come up with a nuke if USA didn't finish it first. you know why?

guess where did brilliant (yet immoral and unethical) Nazi scientists go to after Nazi lost the war? Russians and Americans snatched up dozens of them and offered them an amnesty/immunity deal in exchange of their work. It's called Operation Paperclip

Other countries, especially Germany and the Soviet Union, had their own nuclear weapon programs underway at the same time as the USA. It just happened that the US finished first. If America hadn't deployed the bomb, it would have been just a matter of time before others did. They weren't copy cats; they were on the same path at the same time.

And I don't believe scientist doing this by voluntarily. You and I may never know whats behind the curtain. I don't believe government is telling everything what they were doing. Some areas, I can understand due to national security issues. During the time of developing an A bomb before anyone knows, and government knows any scientist that have these keys are under microscope and they don't take it lightly and I don't think there was any exit sign for any scientists who once got inside the Manhattan project.

We can't know if 100 percent of the people involved in the bomb development were 100 percent enthusiastic about their work but I highly doubt that they were kept against their will to work with a whip on their backs. There was a bit of pressure on the German scientists that we brought here, for sure. Other scientists and engineers worked on the project for various reasons--patriotism, the challenge of science, a good paycheck, etc.

You are right that secrecy and security were very important elements to the success of the Manhattan Project.
 
There have always been "reports" that Truman regretted dropping the bombs. I'm sure he lost a night or two of sleep over it as it was a huge burden for him to carry over the course of his life. How ever it happened... the fact remains... he had three more targets planned and he was going to drop them one by one until Japan surrendered. After Nagasaki, they immediately surrendered.

Just a little known fact to back up Diehardbiker's assertion... the first test was on July 16th 1945. Truman ordered it used only ten days later. Hiroshoma took one center mass on July 26th. We definitely didn't understand the effects of it until after the fact.

Another contributing factor to the decision to drop the bomb that often gets overlooked in history books... it backed Stalin off our asses right quick.

Iodine tablets aren't radioactive.

They can help to an extent for low levels of exposure but not for direct attacks.

I have family members who keep a supply of those tablets at home. The husband is an operator at a nuclear power plant

Nuclear submarines keep them onboard for the crews, too.
 
one more thing - what's the point of those survival kits if you're in a radioactive zone? even with iodine tablets. are you going to stop and cook these freeze-dried food while situation is fubar? you should be more concerned with having a bug-out backpack that would aid you in getting as far away and as quickly as you can from radioactive zone. you can easily handle 2-3 days without food in case of extreme crisis. it is very likely that you will be awake for 2-3 days too.

driving is not an option. you will have to deal with millions of panicked people and blocked roads for hundreds of miles. the entire infrastructure will cease to function in just few hours or a day - water, electricity, etc.

do you and your family/loved one/etc. have a safe location and a preplanned escape route from home & work? have you practiced it at least once? do you have outdoorsman experience and skill? are you in good physical condition for long-distance several-days travel on road/mountain? is your survival kit already packed up and ready to go at moment's notice? do you have a basic first aids training?

if your answers have 2 "no's" or more... then you're basically screwed :)
