Nokia 9290 Communicator

That looks cool, e. Unfortunately, I don't know much about it. There's a review on it at ZDnet if you want to look at one.

I use SMS in my Nokia cellphone/mobile phone as it is called in Europe. My cellphone is an older model from Nokia. It serves my need, and it is good enough. Almost everyone in Norway has a cellphone, including the children!

Many deaf norwegians here use a cellphone for the SMS (text message used in cellphones) here, also. No text pagers... I already asked around. Only USA seems to have that.

I also have an old PDA from Ericsson with all the qwerty keypad, and it serves me fine in situations when I need to communicate with someone else that doesn't know signs or ASL.. I just pull out my PDA and voila! We type away.. instead of writing stuff down by pen/paper. :naughty:

Damn, I hope that someone will invent a pager or any kind of techinical communication that is useable in all over world. All deaf people, included hearies of course, will have an opportunity to contact everyone at any places with out worrying and being limited.

Wow, that's pretty slick! It's only 6 inches in length -- not bad! However, I don't know if I'd like to get one yet. Heck, I don't even own a text pager, so I don't know if I need a load of features.

yea it is because our network is far behind with GSM in usa and europe has already GSM network so that is why you people in europe use nokia 9260 mobile.

we are maybe 50% of GSM network in USA because we have TDMA network for any mobiles and others. remember usa is huge country. that is why we are trying to catch up with GSM network.

i dont mind to have nokia 9260 because 2 way pagers dont work when my partner and i were on wall at 100 or more feet and cant communicate with other partner at the bottom. i use rope to tug twice or 3 times like let go. i saw several climbers use mobile while we are on wall. they work... not fair !

also, if you need to know about nokia 9260 mobile, you need to ask wireless retail store and ask them if that mobile is available. i know some areas in usa already have GSM network... you can find those wireless companies' websites and look for nokia 9260 mobile. my home area doesnt have GSM network yet. :(

What's the difference with cthe communicator? you have to recharge that one too.

If I lived in USA again...I would pick the sidekick with no question. In Australia, mobile (cell) phones are popular within the deaf community here. We don't have any pagers nor the sorts US has, only mobile phones with the capability to send and receive text messages from any mobile phone and pagers from overseas. I stay in touch with my sister (deaf, too) via my phone and her sidekick.

oh bad news... I found out that 9000 series doesn't hve vibrator *shock*
