Former Patriots tight end charged with murder

(CNN) -
Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is now being investigated in connection with a double murder in Boston's South End in July 2012, a law enforcement source close to the investigation told CNN.

The source said that the Boston Police Department has located and impounded a silver SUV with Rhode Island registration placed at the scene of the murders and sought by police for nearly a year. Investigators now believe that Hernandez was renting the impounded vehicle at the time of the 2012 murders, according to the source.

Hernandez is already charged with first-degree murder in last week's shooting death of Odin Lloyd. He is due in court at 2 p.m. to appeal a judge's decision to hold him without bail, the court magistrate told CNN.

A second man arrested in connection with the murder investigation is also expected to appear before a judge.

Carlos Ortiz was arrested in Bristol, Conn., on Wednesday and will have an initial hearing in Attleboro, Mass., District Court as early as Thursday, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

Hernandez is accused in last week's shooting death of Lloyd, whose body was found in an industrial park area less than a mile from Hernandez's home.

He has pleaded not guilty.

He was released by the Patriots after his arrest Wednesday.

A 'model inmate'

During his first 24 hours in jail, Hernandez has been "polite and cooperative" and a "model inmate," Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson said.

He was being held in the jail's medical unit, which is standard for someone who hasn't been incarcerated before, he said.

The former pro athlete showed "no apparent nervousness" in jail, Hodgson said, but he noted the difficulty of going from having thousands of people cheering for him to being "just a number."

While in the medical unit, Hernandez will be locked up for 23 hours a day, with a break for a shower and phone calls, the sheriff said.

Accusation of orchestrating murder

Hernandez "drove the victim to the remote spot, and then he orchestrated his execution," First Assistant District Attorney Bill McCauley said in court Wednesday.

"He orchestrated the crime from the beginning, he took steps to conceal and destroy evidence, and he took steps to prevent the police from speaking to ... an important witness," the prosecutor said.

Defense attorney Michael Fee has said that the evidence is circumstantial and that bail should be granted so that Hernandez can return home to spend time with his fiancee and 8-month-old child.

"It is a circumstantial case. It is not a strong case," Fee said, arguing that Hernandez was not a flight risk and had cooperated with authorities.

Lloyd, 27, was a semipro football player who worked for a landscape company. His sister, Olivia Thibou, told CNN that her brother was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. Lloyd and Hernandez were at a Boston nightclub together the night of June 14, she said.

I doubt it. So far, it sounds a lot more like gang activity. However, clearly, it's not a first time thing.

But, he has 2 more situations in Florida(?) too, right? I think I read that....haven't been following it closely.

this is just.... very bizarre.... :Ohno:

I saw TMZ has a "selfie" he took of him holding a gun.... Odd for a celebrity I would think

Hernandez didn't just start doing, "foolish things". He didn't just acquire a bunch of unregistered firearms yesterday. He's been living this his whole life and could have stepped away from it, but didn't because he didn't want to step away from it.

Hernandez is not in with the wrong crowd, he is the wrong crowd.

Other than having women find them both good looking, there is no comparison between Tom Brady and Aaron Hernandez.

The Pats, if you've read the book Patriot Reigns, know they pick guys who are trouble and whether they can handle that trouble. They know who the guy is and what he does and make a choice on whether they can deal with it. In this case, they were 100% wrong. He'd rather have the unregistered gun than a football.
Gotta wait on more evidence related to the gangs to connect this with a gang-motivated killing though. Lots of NBA players are covered with Sistine chapel-like tattoos and probably over 3/4 of them didn't advance in gangs.
I searched about any alleged gang activity Hernandez had before yesterday, didn't find much yet.

Wirelessly posted

Right, he may spend his whole life in jail IDK

Yes, that what I think too - life imprisonment is standard punishment for most murder cases with some cases go to death penalty.

Celebs are weird people: they're anti gun for the cameras but they love to collect guns illegally and "forget them" when they go out to eat with the wife (Robert Blake). This man has been a loser from day one. He's all ego and clearly there's a reason why he loves the gang life, he's not far removed from those thugs....

If convicted, Hernandez probably get life imprisonment without possibility of parole in prison state penitentiary (not jail). Massachusetts doesn't have death penalty right now.

We need to change that...so many reasons for it...so little jail space.

Tell to Rio about difference between jail and prison.

I'm saying that some states have death penalty, not in Massachusetts.

TXGolfer said Hernandez has 2 situations in Florida - I'm not sure about it.

Most citizens in Massachusetts disagree with you on death penalty.

Send him on down to Florrrrrida or Texassss...Mass-ass-chusettes can have what's left of him (if there is any)....and IF he's guilty....

I know of at least one case where he shot a man in the face; that was down in Florida and since that happened first, maybe we'll get lucky and he'll be sent there. If it's true he killed another person in that state, that may well happen.
