New York man pleads guilty to smuggling nearly 40,000 piranhas into the U.S.

All I can say is OUCH!

Yea, that would destroy some ecosystems. We had a non-native fish introduced here in the Chesapeake Bay about 5 years ago...snake fish or something like that. Nearly destroyed the ecosystem so it costed the Maryland taxpayers a lot of money for the launch to get rid of them.

Yes, Snakeheads are invasive species since piranhas are not.

How about deliver a piranha to your school and show to children in biology class?

I have my friend who own a little piranha in his small aquarium. He kept showing off when he put his finger in the water to see how fast piranha can bite, he kept fingering out of water .... I told him ONE DAY, O N E D A Y!!!!!! He could not keep up with piranha's weak health anymore and decide to let it die.

My ex would put his whole arm in there, it was a 50 or 55? Gallon tank. He'd clean the inside of the glass, move stuff around.....we fed them a lot though. 12 medium sized feeder gold fish or 24 small gold fish every week.

:eek3:
I can not afford lose my arm due to communication, and other important functions that apply to my daily life. Your ex must be

Well, there are reasons he's an ex ;) they'd only eat your arm if they were starving, ours were fat and lazy :D
He's still crazy though

I noticed you dated crazy guys, maybe that is one of your dating criteria? :hmm:

:hmm: I like weird and quirky but I haven't dated anyone in a looooooong time, and I was married 15 years. He's manic depressive......quirky is good, but I'm all set with the depression and Charlie Sheen "Winning!!!" Manic crazy. Never. Again.

I was kinda seeing someone for a little while, after I told him I wanted divorce, but it didn't go anywhere. He wasn't crazy though lol

they live in a warm climate but they are adapting to live here.... they are an invasive species. Same with alot of pets and plants... they didnt know at first, now a change of heart. Like the vines from Viet Nam, would grow anywhere so they brought it here to prevent land errosions...yeah it worked, but started killing trees and everything else as it choked everything out, damaging homes, utility lines and poles and just choking out daylight to other plants, nothing will kill it and it will eventually take over everything.

why dont people just leave nature alone..say it not invasive but wont know until they get into ecology system it cruel and horrible way make money

Piranhas are invasive species in US? I seriously doubt because they don't survive in cold water.

Depends on where, but the states they're illegal are probably the warmer ones that the piranha could survive. Like when we moved from NH, legal, to SC, illegal. So we sold back to the pet store.

I haven't looked to see which states they're banned in. NY seems kind of surprising, since it's too cold, but then again they ban everything.

I found it - State by State List of Statutes - Prohibit Piranha

You are correct about most bans occur in states that have warmer climates for long time.

I found interesting article.
A piranha in Lake Guntersville? - WAFF-TV: News, Weather and Sports for Huntsville, AL

It could have been a Pacu, they look kind of like a red bellied piranha but they have different jaws and get much bigger. That article was fear mongerish, like urban legend not factual about piranha behavior. Yeah I've been looking for articles about piranha causing problems here in the US, but haven't found one yet. There's a few about one being found here and there in different states. But nothing about a lot of them found anywhere.

Yes, that what I think too.

Same here, I can't find any articles that piranhas cause problems in US.

Oh I just followed your other link, about the prohibition. That's an interesting map, they'd be able to survive over the winter in even less of the country than I thought. Even the gray "might" area doesn't come up as far north as I thought it would. But now that I'm thinking about we've had a lot of really cold days here in Texas this winter. I'm actually surprised it doesn't snow more. Maybe it's the wind though, the wind makes it feel so much colder.

Same with Alabama - more colder than South Carolina.
